Sterling Commerce

Acquired by IBM

Is this your company?

Great example of the "Peter Principle" at work. Great for the experience, but woefully inadequate career prospects. - Anonymous employee Sterling Commerce Employee Review

Pros

Best thing about Sterling is the potential - great products if only they could present a united front in offering them, great customers if only they knew how to leverage them, great staff if only they would recognise them. AT&T backing should give Sterling a massive advantage in the market if used correctly.

Cons

Since the tragic demise of Sam Starr company has gone downhill badly. In reality the AT&T relationship rather than bolstering Sterling, provides a feeling of invulnerability from the vicissitues of the market. Company has lost that entrepreneurial edge needed to compete. Lots of "peter's" in authority within the company who have risen through long service but are not capable of delivering on the position they hold. Too much dead wood and bureaucracy. Not willing to pay to retain quality staff - pay and benefits below most significant competitors so Sterling becomes a training ground for people looking to boost their career to the next big company.
