Pros

Incredible and inspiring mission. It is constantly pushing the envelope of what is possible in every way. Incredibly talented, passionate people. Great salary/benefits for a nonprofit. Remote, flexible work - people can truly balance personal and work obligations well.

Cons

A significant side effect of highly competitive compensation is that experienced staff tend to remain in place, limiting opportunities for others to advance. Although the flexibility offered is a plus, it unfortunately comes with a lack of sufficient management and oversight. Many positions do not have clear deliverables or responsibilities, and there is an absence of key performance indicators (KPIs). It's not uncommon for employees to work minimal hours, take time off without mentioning it, or even engage in substantial side gigs during company hours. Despite this, there is little inclination to address these issues. It is also true that a small group of individuals, who lack the necessary skills or experience for their roles, tend to wield disproportionate influence. Often, people are in positions because of their close relationships with the CEO or market themselves well, rather than because they have the qualifications for the job. This results in a situation where many employees find themselves being managed by individuals who are unable to provide effective guidance, oversight, or support. As noted in previous reviews, a disproportionate number of key positions are held by white Americans and Europeans, especially for an organization that prides itself on being global and diverse. The ability to articulate and market oneself effectively is critical here. This creates a bias towards those with backgrounds in Western cultures, as they tend to perform well in self-promotion. These individuals can advance significantly, even without delivering results. On the other hand, if you focus on quietly excelling in your work and expect that to be recognized, it may not happen.

Pros

Compelling mission with significant global reach and visibility Opportunities to engage with senior leaders and high-level strategy early on Work that has the potential to be meaningful when adequately supported and structured

Cons

In my experience, expectations, norms and priorities shifted frequently without clear communication, making it difficult to understand performance standards or succeed consistently in the role Feedback patterns were inconsistent and at times contradictory, creating confusion and persistent self-doubt rather than clarity or growth False urgency was common and often introduced without alignment on scope, authority, or decision-making, leading to unreasonable, reactive work and avoidable stress. There was a noticeable absence of psychological safety, particularly when asking clarifying questions or seeking alignment Over time, the combination of unclear expectations, inconsistent feedback, and shifting priorities resulted in significant emotional and psychological strain. High prevalence of gossip and trash talk culture; over sharing and asking about people's personal lives.
