Pros

Flexibility of remote work and systems

Cons

Many reviews mention the influence of 'founder’s syndrome' at Teach For All, but after nearly a decade in various roles, I see a deeper issue. A small group of white american women hold significant sway over the CEO and the organization’s leadership and culture. Despite having limited professional and leadership experience, their tenure and proximity to the CEO grants them outsized influence that they use for personal gain. This dynamic perpetuates a culture of hierarchy and exceptionalism that solely benefits them often at the expense of equity and genuine support for marginalized communities. These leaders have often advanced on the hard work and expertise of others, predominantly people of color, without offering due recognition or respect. This environment of self-preservation and hypocrisy directly contradicts Teach For All’s stated core values and commitments to DEI. The bottlenecks created by this small group significantly harm the values and mission Teach For All claims to champion.

Pros

- fantastic mission, tremendous impact globally - collaborative environment decent remote work culture and systems - better pay and benefits than most nonprofits

Cons

- work-life balance depends on one's position, title, and understanding of how to play into internal politics. There may be several types of leave policies, including unlimited personal time, but not everyone is enabled by their manager to use them - little accountability among senior leadership with problematic management practices. Staff with no management experience are promoted to team lead positions without any training and necessary experience - some are just completely overworked and expected to continuously deliver while others especially in senior positions openly talk about working at reduced capacity or not being fully engaged

Pros

Staff are very intelligent and committed to the mission. There's a good compensation and benefits package and staff in the right roles get to travel extensively across the globe and work with local organizations.

Cons

Teach For All suffers from a case of Founder's Syndrome and everything is decision by committee. This is combined with a confusing "matrix" organization structure that results in very unclear team or job roles and responsibilities. The result is an extremely inefficient organization where collaboration and project management are nothing but frustrating. If you're looking for a role where you can own your work and have flexibility to innovate, look somewhere else. Furthermore there is little meaningful strategic development or clarity on the purpose of the organization and how it intends to achieve its goals, which is evident by that fact that almost no one can describe what Teach For All does in one sentence. Leadership's purpose seems more to support the CEO than actually guide and manage their teams, ensuring the organization maintains is ineffective status quo.
