Pros

I work in a very team oriented environment in Cairo with extremely professional people that work together to get a very difficult job done with a very high volume of refugees per month. The supervisors are great and care about your success and the success of the mission. They will give you great feedback and help you as much as possible.

Cons

Coming from the U.S. and having to take a severe cut in salary as a local Egyptian employee rather than an international employee is very difficult. Hard to support a family in the U.S. on an Egyptian salary.

Pros

Good benefits, you really do help people

Cons

Human Resources takes a highly specialized approach to talent management. In that you cannot really change functions easily in UNHCR. You have to hyper-specialize in one area. So if you are a protection staff, you tend to burn out from trauma without an internal mechanism to alleviate the burnout. The higher you go in UNHCR, the crazier you become.
