Pros

Mandatory rotation allows you to constantly learn and develop your career into different functions. You have a clear purpose that drives your decision making and often you work with excellent and committed colleagues who want to make a difference in the lives of refugees and forcedly displaced.

Cons

Field experience and ability to master more than one UN language - essential for multicultural environment- lost their comparative value for career promotion. Mandatory rotation is challenging if you have a family and if you spouse also has a career. There is a multiplicity of types of contracts being used by the organization causing a wide range of status, compensation and benefits to staff that may be doing the same job.

Pros

Good benefits, you really do help people

Cons

Human Resources takes a highly specialized approach to talent management. In that you cannot really change functions easily in UNHCR. You have to hyper-specialize in one area. So if you are a protection staff, you tend to burn out from trauma without an internal mechanism to alleviate the burnout. The higher you go in UNHCR, the crazier you become.
