Pros
Manufacturing and rebuilding locomotives is wonderful challenge. It is satisfying to see 100 tons of steel roll out of the factory ready for service.
Cons
The industry is at the mercy of market peaks and valleys. Lay-offs and RIFs are typical. Workers are driven hard to meet the peaks and are later discarded when business is slow.
