I have been working at EngenderHealth full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      - Committed to striving for equality in and through sexual and reproductive health and rights programming - Great teams in 10+ countries around the world are delivering high-quality programmatic work with results - Excellent partnerships with national governments, implementing partners, and donors - A solid legacy on which to continue building - Headquarters (DC) staff is mostly new and newly energized - Teams are...

      Cons

      - Working internationally in sexual and reproductive health and rights is particularly challenging at this time. - The organization went through some major transitions in recent years, and as a result is currently in a mode of building/improving on a multitude of systems and processes at headquarters. I actually see this as a fun challenge and a huge opportunity, but for anyone who does not enjoy change and everything...

      Advice to Management

As a member of the management team, I will leave a comment rather than advice. We are excited about working with teams across the organization to embrace a creative vision for how we can both be—and lead—the change we want to see in the world: gender equality in and through sexual and reproductive health and rights.

      I worked at EngenderHealth full-time

      Pros

The benefits and staff that worked at the now closed NY offices were both great. But please note that who comprised the NY staff is around 98% different now that the org relocated to D.C.

      Cons

All the recent "positive" reviews are totally fake. I was motivated to write this review because I want the team writing those reviews to know that all former EngenderHealth staff are on to their game.

      Advice to Management

Pack it in. This place is unfortunately just a memory.

I have been working at EngenderHealth full-time

      Pros

The organization provides a strong benefits package and 401k. This is largely due to a well-established union within the organization that collectively bargains for the rights and benefits of its workers.

      Cons

As my colleague mentioned in their March 21, 2018 post, don’t be fooled by the positive reviews written with boilerplate language - they are fraudulent reviews written for the executive leadership by absurdly overpaid consultants to recruit new employees in DC. After ousting an incompetent, authoritarian, and manipulative President, whom they hired, the Board took the reigns and decimated its technical and operational...

      Advice to Management

Try on humility and treat others how you would want to be treated. Stop hemorrhaging money out to over-priced lawyers and consultants who have no place in a SRHR organization and develop a ‘real’ strategic plan.

I have been working at EngenderHealth full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

It is no secret that EngenderHealth has fallen on some tough times recently. There was simply too much to overcome without massive disruption to the organization. The (now former) CEO was a terrible fit, staff were/are disgruntled (I love my colleagues, though think many of them behaved in unprofessional ways), a new strategy was revealed and the organization was in the midst of a restructure and relocation. Contentious...

      Cons

It is sad that a lot of long-time staffers will be leaving at the end of April. However, I hope the leadership team see this as an opportunity to revitalize and rebuild EngenderHealth.

      Advice to Management

It will be a challenge to recruit and retain new talent in DC unless you hire a super-CEO (and do it fast). The fate of the entire organization is dependent upon it. Also, please use the move an opportunity to start fresh, with a clearly articulated set of values and a strong, understandable mission. Good luck! You have your work cut out for you.

I worked at EngenderHealth full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Vacation, sick, and personal days are great. Extremely dedicated and committed staff (excluding the executive team), and country specific staff.

      Cons

No leadership. To suggest that the leadership is poor, would be to suggest that there is any leadership at all. Poorly executed strategy, layoffs, and communication (none of which ever had the best interest of staff in mind). Executive team members being promoted to higher positions without any explanations to staff. Telecommuting dissolved (even though the staff met with the union reps and put together evidence-based...

I have been working at EngenderHealth full-time

      Pros

I still do believe in the value of the work that this long-standing NGO performs. Unfortunately, as the past two years demonstrate, it has been difficult to impossible to focus productively on the work amidst the tangle of deception, vindictiveness, and utter incompetence demonstrated by the Board, and the "leadership" at headquarters (culminating in massive lay offs).

      Cons

Let me begin by pointing out the the last few reviews on this site are blatantly fake and have been planted. The organization engages exorbitantly priced consultants to presumably in part craft these insulting, deceptive reviews as they try to salvage what they can of the organization's tattered reputation. These reviews are clearly timed with the organization's MASSIVE recruitment effort, as it seeks to essentially re-hire...

      Advice to Management

Advice to management: Stop paying people to write fake reviews. It’s so obvious, not to mention unseemly, deceptive, etc. Instead, why not put an OUNCE of thought into knowledge transfer before all institutional knowledge is gone. Advice to jobseekers: Do not join this organization at this time unless you like taking big risks with your career. Give it a few years to see if EngenderHealth survives, whether they...

Long history, respected thought leader in SRH field, provides professional development opportunities for staff, collaborative partner. Currently making bold and brave changes in response to changing external environment in order to remain relevant.

        Cons

Can be better at marketing organization's great work.

        Advice to Management

As a long time employee of EngenderHealth I have been through many CEO transitions and major organizational changes, including restructures. I know first-hand how stressful these transitions and changes can be on people. Other sister organizations have been going through similar changes recently which suggests our sector is responding to broader external shifts beyond our control. I think EngenderHealth is responding...
