Pros

Generally speaking, everyone is friendly and enjoyable to be around. Hours are reasonable compared to other agencies. You get to sit on a comfortable chair.

Cons

Bloated and self-serving top-down management. Ridiculous structure: intern, junior, mid, senior, principal, head, director. Pay is abysmal. Brown-nosing is encouraged, and effectively rewarded. The work is generally uninspiring. Creativity is trampled on. The practice hasn't really moved on from Steve Krug's 2000 book 'Don't Make Me Think'. Uninspiring vision - 'be the biggest experience design agency in the world'. There is no one in a leadership role who is someone to aspire to.

Ok if you are a junior

Pros

There are many talented people, and the overall UX processes are well defined - this makes foolproof a good place for junior professionals looking to be exposed to decent UX practices, but less adapt for mid-weight and senior professionals looking for challenges.

Cons

The majority of the projects are short and lack breath and ambition. Most of the activities on the research side involve solely testing third party applications, mostly for the finance sector and there is limited opportunity to innovate. Promotions and bonuses are decided more on personal relationship than on merits and achievements. The middle management is heavy and not always able to cope. There are tensions between teams and groups, people are highly competitive and do not like to share information to keep their competitive advantage. High turn over.

Pros

The people are really nice, and there's a friendly and supportive culture. You get to work on big brands and put interesting work in your portfolio. Work-life balance is fantastic. Mostly good hardware and software tools (Figma, Notion, Slack, etc.) Pay is decent. Very relaxed about where and when you work, flexible working, etc - they don't force you into an office x days a week for the sake of it.

Cons

The company has been on the decline for a few years now. The work you do is still good, but the employee experience is getting worse and worse. Benefits are below average, no training budget, comms leave much to be desired, HR is so under-staffed it's a joke, policies being handed down from a 10,000 person company, leadership team doesn't seem to have any control on anything and are terrible at communicating. Morale is low. You get the sense that people are just going through the motions and waiting for market to pick up so they can move on to a better opportunity. Retention is bad but would be even worse if the economy wasn't so uncertain.

Foolproof Response

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to share your experience of working at Foolproof. Our people and culture make up an important part of Foolproof, so it’s great to hear about your positive experiences working alongside your fellow colleagues. As mentioned in your review, we pride ourselves on our supportive culture as well as the flexibility and work-life balance we offer our employees, and view all three of these as benefits of working at Foolproof and a testament to our talent. We are therefore disappointed to hear about your perspective on employee experience and your observations on the company benefits and communications from the leadership team being poor. As a team, we do aim to provide timely responses to our employees’ questions, but often need to discuss these with wider teams within the business first. However, we are aware that this can sometimes lead to a delay in communications and reassure you that this is an issue we discuss frequently. We do take your feedback on board and we are continually working to improve communications, transparency and internal processes as well as to align investments to right initiatives. As a current employee I'd like to invite you to have a conversation with me in confidence (at leslie.fountain@foolproof.co.uk) to discuss these points. Kind regards, Leslie
