I have been working at Hussmann full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities for overtime. Offer benefits for union and non union positions.

    Cons

Lack of effective communication and processes. Managements sole mission is to ship cases on time yet do very little to change processes to help achieve their goals. Lack of integration between office and production floor employees.

    Advice to Management

Implement effective strategies to help accomplish goals and change company culture.

I worked at Hussmann full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Jobs at Hussmann are about as recession-proof as they get. Supermarkets do well in poor economic times, because people don’t eat out as much. In good economic times, higher-end supermarkets such as Whole Foods expand.

Pros Assembly Floor: LOTS of money to be made with overtime. EZ advancement for those that wish to push hard. You can go from assemblyman, to line lead, to manager in a short time. There are hard-working people here that will rub off on you and help you through the long hours.

Pros Office: Great corporate benefits such as 3 weeks vacation to start, most office jobs don’t offer this until 5 years of service.

    Cons

Cons Assembly Floor: Incredible pressure. At lot, a lot, of hours and unpredictable overtime, sometimes weekends. 16-hour days sometimes happen. Shortly after, you are forced into a furlough day with no pay. Sometimes you work until 11pm then have to be at work at 6am the next day. I am surprised no one has fallen asleep at the wheel on their way home. Engineering is not as strong as they should be, and this creates a lot of crisis-oriented work. It is very hot in the factory 3 months of the year.

Cons Office: This place is run like an insane asylum. Once upon a time, an office person was awarded “Employee of the Month” for extra hours put into a certain order, and two months later they were fired because of all the mistakes they made. Management gives the absolute minimum amount of time to get work done, then they blame you if it’s not perfect. For your yearly goals, they assign you certain metrics, but you have to work on other things. Then at the end of the year you get a bad review and a poor raise. At this place, expect not much more of a raise than inflation.

    Advice to Management

Ask yourselves: Why does is there never time to do it right, but always time to do it twice?

I worked at Hussmann full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can almost double your salary with all the overtime they work.

    Cons

Upper management spends too much time on the floor.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the way. We on the floor can run things without you.

I worked at Hussmann full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are none...at least not anymore

    Cons

Hussmann has slowly ruined this branch since they bought Taylor ind out. I worked as a sheet metal Forman for them for nearly 10 years. When I started, they did every hy-vee grocery store. There was at least 5 2-man crews in the field busy year round and a hand full of guys in the shop. It took nearly 16 years, but they have managed to lose nearly all of the hy-vee work and are down to 3 sheet metal workers...for now. Fortunately for me, I saw the writing on the wall and quit over 2 years ago. I went to their competitor and have never looked back. Also, if you get injured here, expect to have to sue them and get the best lawyer you can find, hussmann will drag it out for years. Finally, id give 0 stars if that were an option.

    Advice to Management

I guess if u want to just have a warehouse facility in des moines, keep Jim mccrum in charge. He's done a fantastic job of single handedly ruining one of the best sheet metal shops in town. Way to go jim!
