I worked at Intrepid Travel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved working at Intrepid Travel and being a part of the Intrepid Group. I stared with the company as a tour leader and eventually ended up in Custom Groups Sales. The passion everyone has in the company is amazing and their commitment to Responsible Travel is excellent. The people I worked with across all continents were amazing and Intrepid just has some of the best people ever!

    Cons

Limited growth opportunities if you do not reside in the UK or Australia. The company is changing this slowly but the closure of their USA office means it will be difficult for US residents to progress with the company.

    Advice to Management

Overall, keep up the good work! Intrepid Group is an amazing company delivering an awesome product, and doing amazing things in the travel world.

I worked at Intrepid Travel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - High energy, passionate co-workers
    - Travel Benefits
    - The Intrepid Foundation does a lot of good in the world
    - New North American regional director gives me hope that some of the cons below will be improved upon

    Cons

    - Very little room for growth in the company if you aren't in Melbourne office. Even those willing to move to another continent will move laterally in their career (at least those in sales roles)
    - Extremely high stress. My last few months in the US office (which is now closed) saw all of us clocking about two hours of overtime per night and still not hitting the extremely high sales targets
    - High-level growth is prioritized with no regard for what tools are required for staff to achieve those goals
    - This job used to make me feel so lucky to have it; by the end, it felt like a call center. - It's much more of a customer service job than a sales job.
    - Pay is low for the industry
    - Commission structure was changed to reduce the financial burden of staffing on the business (translation: to pay sales teams less as sales targets skyrocketed)
    - Managers who were bad at their job were promoted while low-level employees who worked hard but didn't fit into the clique saw no movement in their careers
    - The California office was closed in 2018, leaving a lot of experienced and loyal staff with the option to either lose their jobs or move to Canada
    - When the office is backed up on work, customers get angry (rightfully so) and you're left to deal with people's high tempers resulting from a situation that you did not cause
    - The company has great values but these don't always translate to how staff within the business are treated
    - It seems like the North American region was a special case and staff in the other offices are much happier, I hope this is the case and that the North American office is improving :)

    Advice to Management

    - Take constructive criticism as an opportunity to grow
    - It's great to have friends at work, but please work to make sure that clique membership is not a requirement for professional opportunities to grow int he company
    - Sales teams work their butts off for very low pay, please recognize them for the work they do
    - Intrepid got skilled staff for not being a call center, you'll keep those staff by not becoming one

I have been working at Intrepid Travel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Getting a paycheck to pay the bills.

    Cons

They don't know how to treat customers (external and internal). Company culture has no sensitivity to consumers. Very disappointing after having met one of the co-founders.

    Advice to Management

You should continue to learn and remember what customer service is, even if your company has been around for so long.

    Pros

Get to work in the travel industry; the company does give a lot back to the communities in which we visit.

    Cons

This region can be very disorganized, management often makes decisions which negatively impact employees. Almost always understaffed and not the greatest pay.

I worked at Intrepid Travel full-time

    Pros

    Great colleagues
    Nice office
    Travel benefits
    Team bonding trips

    Cons

    Low pay
High stress - intense workloads and high expectations. Revenue targets out the roof.
Management gives little notice or care to employees' well-being
Very little work/life balance or flexibility
While company values are great, under the surface they are not embodied.
Growth opportunities are slim to none.

    Advice to Management

Actually care about your employees and treat them like human beings rather than puppets. Use empathy regularly as is always brought up (rather than just talking about it). Personify company values and purpose when engaging internally (not just externally). Allow more flexibility - this will benefit everyone including yourselves!

I worked at Intrepid Travel part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunity to travel, good training, good company values, colleagues and itineraries

    Cons

You get the 'groundhog day' feeling from running the same trip, in the same locations pretty soon.
