Early in a career - Great perks, horrible pay
Sep 6, 2012 - Coordinator in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Free swag and shows can't be beat. Tons of great artists and a lot of cool shows. - You meet some really great and interesting folks. The majority of the people who work here are very cool and hard working. Most people work at places like this because they have always dreamt of working in music and are happy to be there.
Cons
- The hours are long. The dinners and shows are fun but they do become mandatory. Great when you are young and full of energy and sans obligation. Afterwards, it is a breeding ground for adult-children. That can be a lot to handle. - The pay is terrible. If you can figure out how to live on 30k a year in Manhattan for a while in order to chase a dream, do it. If you have bills, you're screwed. - The promotion to other positions is highly unfair. It is far more political than it should be and has little to do with company loyalty or work production. Supervisors will go so far as to lie to the very high level executives and claim no one internally is interested in a job. You're either a favorite here or there is no growth.

Pros
It is a great place to work. Excellent Diversity of projects and artists to work with. Enriching experience. The music industry is changing rapidly but there is still a lot of success happening.
Cons
It is a great place to work. You are having so much fun working that it takes up most of your time. You become passionate about your work and the artists that you are working with and you become obsessed to see them grow and excel.

My internship at Island Def Jam was fun, insightful, and worthwhile.
Mar 12, 2013 - Publicity Intern in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The people working in the office are really cool and the environment is laid back. Dress is casual, and there is always something fun going on. You have access to awesome events and get to meet artists, and you will meet some really genuine people who have great advice to offer.
Cons
It seems like there isn't much room for moving up in the company. The interns seemed disposable. People working full-time always seemed to be stressed, or complaining about something.

Fun, thrilling, never boring. I was able to meet many people of many different backgrounds and achieve my goals.
May 20, 2014 - Talent Scout & Producer in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Travel, doing what you love for a living, creating music, making people happy, changing lives, giving talent the exposure that it deserves.
Cons
There are a ton of politics that go into the music industry. Always having to do damage control was not something I looked forward to every day.

Pros
Learning about the music industry, meeting some great people, attending events, meeting artist, being able to contribute to your department.
Cons
Too many interns in one department, we often found ourselves looking for work to do. There were many times were there wasn't anything to do. Other than being included in brainstorming and office duties, it was a typical internship. Running random errands, organizing cd, unpacking boxes, organizing closets, mailings, and cds.
- Former Intern★★★★★
Pros
Great opportunity to work at one of the best labels today, concert perks. Can meet some really talented, outgoing people. In-office performances!
Cons
Few job openings, many interns leave without any potential for a full time position, execs rarely acknowledge you..Because of the lack of interns, you become everyone's intern. Assistants run the company it seems like..

Amazing Coworkers who promote growth within
Sep 16, 2019 - Coordinator in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Team efforts and always allowing contributions from all departments to create success
Cons
People don't want to leave so growth(headcount) may take longer than other labels.

Pros
Challenging work environment. Junior & mid-level employees are dedicated, passionate, & hard working individuals. Most dept. heads care about their staff.
Cons
Mid-level managers lead by panic. When the execs say something it has to happen 5 minutes ago. Budgeting is a joke. Trying to even secure contractually obligated funds is next to impossible.
