    Pros

Diverse and challenging work. You must have excellent writing and verbal communications skills.

    Cons

Managers are passive aggressive and have poor people management skills. Salaries are low and raises weak.

    Advice to Management

Choose your managers based on people and program management skills not on technical skills.

I worked at Luna Innovations full-time

    Pros

    for Technology Development Division:
    - significant individual influence on technical direction of projects at every level
    - exposure to wide variety of scientific fields
    - freedom to pursue interests within chemistry, polymers, biomedical, electrical engineering, etc
    - great office environment, driven coworkers with team mentality
    - flexible work hours and generous time off allotment

    Cons

    for Technology Development Division:
    - difficult to advance position within company, additional responsibilities can be obtained, difficult to obtain monetary recognition
    - no internal funding available, therefore external R&D funding must justify staffing, purchases, travel, continuing education, etc
    - lack of internal funding/support for purchases to upgrade outdated lab equipment

I worked at Luna Innovations full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of freedom with flexible hours. Good for self driven people and entry level positions. Education > Experience. Novel innovative ideas generated year over year. Learn a wide range of technologies and applications.

    Cons

Volatile CEO. Education > Experience. Incapable of retaining employees due to lack of HR and managerial experience. Poor bonus package and no actual plan for salary growth, mostly cost of living promotions. Fragile infrastructure and unprofitable company constantly unsatisfied employees due empty promises from upper management. Constant increase in responsibilities with no compensation.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and experience. Hire a marketing/ sales team that can promote products instead of expecting scientist to commercialize products.

I worked at Luna Innovations full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The technology here is fascinating, and I was worried at some point that I wouldn't find a job that could keep me interested after leaving here. Luna has a lot of young, intelligent, fun people, and the chemistry is pretty great between employees.

    Cons

The executive team has made some very questionable decisions over the years, and I've seen a lot of people leave, either being escorted out the door or by leaving on their own accord. Multiple times I've seen multiple people get laid off at the same time, which means that the job feels very unstable. That's why I left. There aren't too many places of this caliber in Blacksburg, so it's unfortunate that the executive team keeps running off good people.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job connecting with your employees, and recognize the strengths of the team.
