I worked at Mainstream Engineering full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay higher salaries than most companies. They offer decent benefits.

    Cons

They have no concept of how products are actually developed. This may be on purpose because the company is a sole proprietorship. Their model is based on employing young engineers with no family and no responsibilities. That way they can skimp on benefits and overhead costs. The main job any engineer there has is to write and win proposals. They win small business investment and research (SBIR) contracts knowing that they will never actually make a product. They just need to get the 1 or 2 million dollar Phase II award to keep enough money coming in from the Federal Government to maintain their staff. So if you go to work there, just know that the majority of your time will be spent writing proposals, not developing useful products. Your experience there will not help you find another job because you won't develop the skills you need to work at a company that actually makes manufacturable products.

    Pros

I am strong willed to be cooperative, accurate, humorous, fast-paced, serious and open-minded.

    Cons

Personal attitude to be the life of the crew instead of caring for the things I have to do of myself.

    Advice to Management

To set aside your patterns of the past and finally build a company team you've always wanted, desired, and understood.

    Cons

There is no stake in the company for employees, no shares, or stock options. MEs are the preferred group. Don't expect any support unless you are in a field directly connected to HVAC.

    Pros

The company provides free soda and juices.

    Cons

Female employees are not provided the opportunities or respect that would be expected in a professional work environment. There is too much finger pointing when something goes wrong, with management seeking to place blame on the workforce rather than evaluate its own decision making. Management does not employ accepted practices to inspire and retain its workforce.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees (especially the women) with respect and appreciate the value of their efforts.

I worked at Mainstream Engineering full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good Location, free beverages, benefits are okay

    Cons

Upper management is very young, immature thinking. Most managers are just out of college, no real experiences, first job out of school. No direction, no communication. Employees are hung out to dry. Departments do not communicate with each other. The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing, and policies change daily. Employees are dissatisfied, turn over is constant. Not one women in management or supervisory role.

    Advice to Management

Reevaluate your processes and your management team. Get out of producing products in JIT, Just in time. purchase more than one for one components. Listen to the production workers and don't make promises to customers that you just can't keep. Stop finger pointing, looking for someone to blame.
