    Positive Outlook

I have been working at NHLS full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pro-active organization with a vision and mission to improve the quality of laboratory medicine in South Africa. Huge emphasis is placed by the organization on ongoing training of existing staff as well as the training of student technologists and technicians, and non-core staff (Laboratory Clerks, etc.) Accreditation to ISO 15189 is the target of all NHLS Laboratories, with various structured programs being use for the implementation of Quality management systems in all NHLS Laboratories.

    Cons

the NHLS is a fee-for-service organization with the client base consisting of mainly Government hospitals and clinics. Non-payment by the Government hospitals for services rendered has constantly placed the NHLS under severe financial pressure and delayed the implementation of many objectives that would result in the long-term in a greatly improved and faster laboratory service
(an example of this would be the implementation of full laboratory automation)

    Advice to Management

More time and effort needs to be spent on planning - all possible scenarios need to be contemplated before implementation of plans. Payment arrangements with the Department of Health needs to be finalized before budgets are allocated for improvement projects, as projects which are discarded after implementation results in huge financial losses.

    Pros

Job security for most staff categories; benefits are structured and reasonable. National employer. As joint staff with universities, many pathologists have research freedom.
