Pros

Firstly a wonderful charity and has transformed so many lives, inspirational and offer so many services to people with disabilities.. Beautiful ullenwood campus environment. Use of pool / gym. On site catering services. Expanding and growing company. Majority of staff are friendly, supportive and caring. Career development opportunities if your face fits. Excellent induction training preparing you for the role. Staff feedback usually actioned. Always overtime available due to shortage of staff. Pay is better than most healthcare settings, however with todays cost of living not great, many people have to work overtime hours to boost pay.

Cons

Physically and mentally draining, increasingly complex service users / high medical care and challenging behavior. No breaks, even on 12 hour shifts. Breaks are paid so due to the busy environment you are expected to continue working throughout. Rarely see the senior management team mix unless inspections are taking place. Low pay for very high responsibility and stress. Some individuals in other departments look down upon care staff, lack of respect is evident. Refresher training not planned and given when it should be. Currently a very high rate of care staff turnover resulting in continuous and constant recruitment drives, lowered standards and a high use of unfamiliar external agency staff many of who's level of care commitment is questionable. Required equipment to carry out job role is not always readily accessable such as laptops / computers, recording stations. No staff rooms in residences / no time away from the work floor. Recent years appear to be employing many people who are unqualified, unskilled and generally lack any sense of a caring nature. If your face fits and you do exactly as you are told you will be left alone and may be able to progress into senior management roles, if you question anything or speak up you will eventually be constructivley dismissed or out the door. Terrible sickness policy, front line care staff sit within the same policy as office based staff. Early / Late shifts. Finishing at 11pm and back in at 7am. Little sleep / fatigue, no social life, long hours on alternate weekends. Senior management team are rarely seen mixing "on the floor" or checking in on service users or co-workers, until there is an inspection or visitors then they are tripping over eachother to support!

National Star Response

We’re sorry to hear your views on working at National Star and hope that you would feel able to come and speak to our HR team about the issues you have raised so that we can begin to address your concerns. As an organisation we take the health and well-being of our staff very seriously and have recently launched a new health and well-being strategy to reinforce our future plans for supporting staff. Our new Mental Health First Aiders are settling into their roles and we have plans to recruit even more people to this team in 2020. Our Healthshield benefit is helping staff access a range of health benefits at little or no cost to employees, including a 24/7 counselling and support helpline. Our Link consultation group is constantly bringing issues to the attention of senior management when they feel procedures need to change. The annual staff survey is another way in which we actively seek the views of staff on a whole range of issues and face-to-face staff briefings within teams appear to be working in terms of keeping our 1,000 staff better informed. We will never stop working on improving our internal communication as we know a better informed workforce is happier and motivated.

Pros

Lovely grounds Working towards a meaningful goal Opportunity for career development

Cons

Very focused on students and not on staff wellbeing. Poor sickness policy, poor pension, poor maternity policy. Very demanding job. Everyone is very hardworking and cares but there appears to be a culture of telling on each other to management. Very target driven with unrealistic goals. Quite a negative workplace as so many people are overworked.

Thanks for recognising the caring nature of our team and the efforts that staff make to focus on the needs of students. Many of our staff benefits, such as our health cashback scheme and free sport and leisure opportunities are designed to support staff wellbeing. We continue to invest in this area as we appreciate that our employees are critical to the success of the charity.
