    I have been working at NuoDB full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Management is very smart, sane, and transparent. Execs sit in the desk farm with everyone else.
    * Highly skilled engineering team doing amazing work on the product.
    * Fiscally responsible (i.e., moving out of downtown to save money; nice, but not lavish, parties and gifts).
    * Well stocked kitchen and you can request other items.
    * An enormous business opportunity.
    * Friendly culture - low finger-pointing, blaming, red-tape. Very much a "get-it-done" place.
    * Top-end Mac laptops and whatever other hardware you need.
    * Good work/life balance with flexible WFH arrangements.
    * Nice mix of on- and off-site social opportunities.

    Cons

    * Since it's a startup, it's not immune to stressful times, especially around product releases.
    * There are considerable engineering challenges to be overcome, but therein lies the opportunity.
    * The current office space has drawbacks in terms of noise level and meeting space, but the company is moving in the spring.
    * The "employee review/rating" form is outdated and doesn't fit with our culture. This is the biggest con.

    Advice to Management

    Not much to say here because it seems like we are headed in the right direction. Stay the course, and make sure we are taking on the right amount of risk.

    I have been working at NuoDB full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    I've been with NuoDB for a number of years now: the focus of the company has improved markedly. For a while we were chasing any dollar we could find, which led to some schizophrenic (and not productive) requirements and unfair burdens on the dev team. In the last 12-18 months that has (mostly) stopped and we've identified a reasonable target market and taken the time to stabilize the product.

    * Fantastic, smart people
    * Challenging and exciting technology
    * Great environment: open, collaborative, transparent mgmt team
    * Flexible: work from home is fine, good PTO
    * Good work/life balance: taking vacation is encouraged, family responsibilities are taken seriously. I've worked many places, even bigger companies, with much worse attitudes.
    * Move to Alewife... much more convenient (and less expensive)

    Cons

    * Codebase is showing some age.
    * Even with tighter focus we have more things we need to do than people to do them.
    * Emphasis on a few large accounts is great for the company but need to be careful that it's good for the product, too.
    * Move to Alewife... Kendall is much more fun. At least it's still a quick, convenient T ride away from Cambridge.

    Advice to Management

    The job market is unbelievably tight but redouble efforts to find great engineers. Otherwise, keep moving in our current direction: it's the right one!

    Kendall Sq location can be a pain to get to. Moving to Alewife in April 2017.

    I have been working at NuoDB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great corporate culture with a lot of little perks to keep employees happy. Some of the smartest people you've ever met - so many people to learn from. Exciting technology with plenty of potential.

    Cons

    Change is a constant - more so than the typical start-up. The problem the technology is trying to solve is extremely difficult, and in the past the company has been overzealous in talking about the possibilities of what it should be able to do someday, not the realities of what it can do today, putting pressure on the engineering team.

    Advice to Management

    Recent efforts to increase transparency and maintain focus are great - make sure they don't fall by the wayside.

    Pros

    The salary is reasonable. There are talented people at the company. Wine and cheese event every week.

    Cons

    NuoDB is a badly run company with a deluded egotistical management that treats employees very poorly and is pushing a product that doesn't work.

    Advice to Management

    There isn't manager at this company that listens to advice.

    I have been working at NuoDB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good compensation; opportunity to excel and do cool work; many learning opportunities; outstanding co-workers in every department - smart, dedicated, rock solid. Lots of fun activities; wine and cheese every Friday; lots of food, snacks, drinks, and all that.

    Cons

    Unrealistic expectations can sometimes be a huge downer. Not generous with vacation, personal time or sick time. Not the best life-work balance

    Advice to Management

    Fewer fast moves and changes in approach. Get more feedback from employees instead of just a few executives

    Pros

    Smart people, passionate about the product. Challenging problems to solve. Ample snacks, and wine and cheese every week.

    Cons

    Lack of transparency and poor communication from upper management. Product is unstable, which leads to unreasonable workloads.

    Advice to Management

    When you ask your employees to propose solutions to problems they identify, actually listen to and help them tackle them, rather than continue to ignore it and hope it will work it out.
