Pay people what they are worth, let go of some of the outside perks.

I worked at OpenSky full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Awesome people, talented hiring, great culture overall, with some downsides.

    Cons

Big egos at the highest level that is counter to the flat culture they espouse. Work life balance could be better.

    Advice to Management

Good company that could still up it's game from an HR perspective. There's a big focus on hyping the company as a great place to work but that's the PR engine. Most developers for example, feels the people are talented but the pace not sustainable or realistic. A few all night sessions, etc. Overall a very decent place to work a few years but they need to back up the hype with more benefits and better work life balance. Everyone gets along very well and there's a lot of talent but there's burn out.

I have been working at OpenSky full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great hard-working people
    - Hands-on approach that could really change the business

    Cons

Another former co-worker put it best... "Opensky was like a playground & you had to be cool w/the cool kids who always hang out on the cool jungle gyms to fit in"

Felt like it was all smoke and mirrors, no actually substance to the business.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent, too much behind closed doors. Change the "cool kids" culture, you are cool but not that cool....

    Pros

Lunch catered 2x per week. Regular happy hours. Fast paced environment. Supportive co-workers.

    Cons

Sometimes the past can be too fast with too many projects going on at once. No 401k matching.

I worked at OpenSky full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free lunch twice a week, stocked kitchen with soda and snacks, happy hours some Fridays. Casual dress code, easy to get them to give you a company laptop, all the latest tech stuff to play with.

    Cons

Feels particularly hostile if you're female - all female management was eliminated during acquisition of another company. Heaven forbid you're not in the boys' club up in NYC or you won't have any say (and will probably be terminated if you try to go outside your designated bubble). Lots of money spent to make you feel good but little interest in keeping quality people or the important benefits like quality health insurance.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people, get a five year plan beyond "make money," trust that women know things, and actually give your employees job descriptions and ways to excel.
