Pros

Job scheduling flexibility and remote work.

Cons

Before you choose to take an employment role with Verisk Canada as a Loss Control Specialist you should know the truth about your income potential, how long it takes to become proficient, and the job retention rate. The one thing that this position will provide is flexibility of working hours and this is sold to potential employees as a benefit. It is true that you can pick the days you work. However for at least the first year, more so the first 1.5 years you have to work 6 days a week and long days. It is a commission position and one has to become efficient in all aspects of the job including doing onsite house inspections and then doing the home office work of inputing data to generate the reports. If you have large, fixed expenses like a mortgage and house bills and do not have a spouse or partner who is earning a good income this job is not for you. Your income for at least the first year will be very low and inconsistent. Even after one becomes experienced some pay cheques will be low- even sub $1,000 for two weeks. The company does not tell you this, they just say that you need to work more if your earnings are low. I made a mistake in not taking an alternative high salaried position with a different organization after working 1 month for Verisk. I bought into the promise of high earnings and the ability to manage my own time with this insurance report business. After having worked for Verisk for two years I can look back and clearly see where I was misled. They say it takes two years to become skilled enough to make a decent living. This may be true however in this role you are at the mercy of the person who assigns files to you. If you are given a very inefficient package of inspections to do, ie: if they are scattered over a large geographic region, you will drive long distances and do few inspections and write few reports. You cannot control this. Additionally, there is a very high rate of turnover and fail rate of new employees. Many people quit within 6 months. Only approximately 10% of new hires last to the 4 year mark. Again- you have to be able to afford to have an inconsistent income and if you want to make a substantial income you need to work many, many hours or work with a spouse or partner. Only then can you make nearly $100K per year. At this income level you would have no life- just a work life. Also, the Canadian subsidiary of Verisk has been bought and sold at least 3 times in the past 10 years and this creates employment uncertainty. My final assessment of the Loss Control Specialist position at Verisk Canada is for a potential employee to pass over this position and find another job that has better income potential. I place this company in the realm of Primerica or another investment business that promises a large income and the perks of a self employment style working environment while not being upfront of actual earnings or long term new employee retention.
