I have been working at PHD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Cutting edge technologically. Serves the fast paced world of factory automation. Fairly stable.

    Cons

Stuck in the past regarding I.T., Sales, and Marketing. No CEO for almost 6 years... No leadership. Current acting CEO is over 90 yrs old and does this "on the side"... Very little reinvestment in the company to better serve customers and meet customer demand. This creates a sometimes unnerving work environment where customers are constantly disappointed. PHD over-promises and under-delivers. 'Wants to compete with bigger companies but won't invest in the manpower and infrastructure to succeed.

    Advice to Management

You want to compete in the big game, you need to invest in the company. Else be satisfied to stay in the minor league.

    Pros

Probably the best place you can learn the fundamentals of being an NPD Engineer. Heavy use of GD&T and other engineering principles such as FEA. Great group of talented people that you will learn a lot from. Upper management is generally approachable and open to new ideas. THe processes of NPD are very streamlined and efficient.

    Cons

Too many processes in place that slow down development of new product development. Budget is too tight on making a prototype for a new concept. I hate to say Bureaucratic but that is sometimes how it would feel. Some of the longer term employees are not respected enough.

    Advice to Management

Ditch the strenuous new product approval process, take better care of your high performers and spend some money on the Engineers' crazy ideas. Don't let PHD get in its own way.

I have been working at PHD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Cons

Management has their quirks but overall pretty good.

    Pros

Nice people, Technologically advanced products and knowledgeable people

    Cons

Professionally grounded in 1970. There is way too much of the "that's the way we always 'done it" attitude from some moddle and most of the upper management. There is a great fear of change and a destruction of years of relationship building by a CEO who came in 2001.

    Advice to Management

We need better communication from the top down. We need better and more insightful leadership. We have got to get back to building and valuing relationships with distribution and end users. We have got to quit getting sucked into the proverbial 'race to the bottom'. We cannot compete on price primarily. Our customers want reliability in our relationship. Our customers want solutions. They also want a long term approach. NOT the quick buck or big score.
