I worked at PJM Interconnection full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

GREAT Company with terrific benefits. Hiring Engineers, IT, Analysts, and other professionals on limited basis. PJM also employees contract employees.
    Membership continues to grow.

    Cons

Common to many Companies, there is not enough bandwidth to cross train between employees in a Department so it can be challenging to turn off the job for vacation or during time off.

    Advice to Management

PJM continues to be a top company providing exceptional value to both Members and employees.

    Pros

Benefits, potential for good work life balance, mostly good people there. Healthy mix of employees, solid diversity, etc.

    Cons

Not always a fully level playing field for advancement. Can sometimes be a bit discouraging for hard workers that don't "schmooze" well.

    Advice to Management

Try to place a higher value on people based on actual contributions, rather than preconceived notions about their value.

    "OK overall but risks ahead"

    Pros

Benefits and compensation were very good (though like many companies, the company would increase the employee's share of costs each year.)

The company generally looked after employees and tended to promote from within, which was sometimes a Con (see below.) Co-workers were generally helpful and there weren't too many difficult people.

If you catch on with the right group/manager PJM can be a rewarding place to work.

    Cons

PJM had a tendency to hang on to non-performers in management too long. This led to bad morale and staff turnover in that manager's group. Again, your experience at PJM was highly dependent on who you worked for.

PJM in general, and IT in particular, was very bureaucratic. If you are an IT professional and are used to being able to work with some autonomy and creativity, PJM might not be for you.

    Advice to Management

Be more selective about who you promote. A mistake there is very costly. Also be willing to fix your mistakes and manage non-performers out.

Stop creating headaches for yourself by overreacting to compliance requirements. All that is required is to meet the letter of the law. Exceeding them only wastes resources and causes frustration.

    Pros

The food there was ok. The atmosphere was boring as hell. Wouldn't recommend. Probably have better luck finding something in Philadelphia, rather than this place.

    Cons

Alot of things. My boss specifically was one of the main reasons I didn't like it there. She was like a teacher's pet. Very annoying. Sad.

    Advice to Management

I would say, better training. I felt very in the dark from day 1. And also, maybe don't hire someone and then leave for 3 weeks for your destination wedding. Maybe wait til you come back?
