Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Fast Moving Start Up

    Oct 20, 2022 - Designer

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Culture is fun and encourages remote employees to get to know each other. Innovative and constantly coming up with new features. Great benefits and unlimited time off that we're actually encouraged to use! Flexibile and understand the importance of family coming first.

    Cons

Some of the long time employees struggle with process changes. Things change so fast that they aren't always communicated right away.

    Slowly going downhill.

    Nov 14, 2022 - Strategic Account Executive

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great people, flexible remote work, product is really helpful for the right customer. Pay is not terrible- but also not as competitive as they will lead you to think.

    Cons

Leadership on the sales team is lacking greatly. Lots of people thinking their way is the only way and do not take or ask for any feedback from the people working in the trenches. Very little support, disconnected teams, and lack of true leadership. From middle management up to, no one is truly invested in helping sales reps. Decisions made quickly and with no oversight creating tougher jobs on day to day things. Salary is low and quota is the same for all reps regardless of partnerships, region, etc. creating an uneven playing field. Constant pressure. Weekly, daily, hourly. Constant pressure to work harder, longer, and better regardless of current success. No career growth. This is the biggest one. There is no where to go. No promotions, no roles to help sales team, no answers when asked. High growth startup and less than 10 promotions have happened in two years or more. Outside of people management, there is no other roles aside from “sales rep” which is the same role from entry up to the highest, just different quotas. Turnover has sped up recently.

    Pros

Very straightforward onboarding process. Tons of communication and team oriented. Leaders know what they are doing and are always there to assist. Popmenu has been a phenomenal experience overall!

    Cons

Popmenu is growing at an amazingly fast rate which may come with unexpected duties, otherwise a great learning experience.

    Pros

    - Culture: Everything at Popmenu comes from the heart. People are really living the company values. It's such an inclusive and genuine culture (which is unparalleled in my experience). - Vision: This product is a game changer in the market and Popmenu has such a bright future ahead.

    Cons

It's still an early stage company. Either you are up for that or not.

    Don’t Buy the Hype

    Nov 16, 2022 - Anonymous/Employee in Atlanta, GA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company mission, vision and culture are big selling points. There’s a lot of enthusiasm that’s easy to get behind.

    Cons

Bear with me here… From my experience: Expectations are skewed. You’re expected to complete tasks requiring skills that are not taught, nor were they expected of you stepping into the role. Management will give you a task without any direction, even though they already have an idea of THEIR desired outcome. You’re expected to “take ownership” and figure it out on your own, but if you don’t complete the task in the exact manner that management wanted you to, you’re criticized and demoralized through harsh and unnecessary feedback. The core values are used more to drive fear than to motivate and recognize efforts. Autonomy is quickly stripped through excessive micromanagement. Micromanagement due to inexperience and lack of training. Having your own opinion or disagreeing with managements’ one-sided views will put a target on your back. It’s best to bite your tongue and keep your head down, or else you’ll find more and more instances where “you’re wrong”. There are no checks and balances within management. Favorites are played and you’ll see promotions given back-to-back to the same people while other deserving team members aren’t even considered.

Started Great has Turned Sour Quickly

    Nov 14, 2022 - Sales Executive
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Product is smooth and works well for clients who invest the time to learn it and leverage it.

    Cons

If you are looking for a place to grow, that has minimal politics, learn new skills, receive help and have realistic expectations then avoid at all costs. They sell the dream and will tell you everything is great and you are great and act like everyone cant see the writing on the wall. There is no opportunity for growth in sales regardless of how you do. There are reps who have been here for years and they cant sniff a promotion. A mass exodus is coming. Less than 10 people out of 65 will hit quota in 2022. They hide the churn numbers and the VPs and President get defensive whenever asked challenging questions and act like you are not smart enough to read between the lines. If you come here make sure you get everything in writing as to what is provided to you and hold them accountable.

    Great Company!

    Pros

It's a great company that allows you to bring your whole self to work. There is an undeniable combination of intelligence and personality throughout the org that makes it fun to work here.

    Cons

I'd say two of our biggest internal challenges are communication and organization. But also, we're a startup and moving fast, figuring out complexities as we go.
