I have been working at Port City Java part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I've had great experiences with the managers that I've worked for. As far as food service goes, it's a decent place to work. The tips can be good and some customers treat you with respect.

    Cons

    (1) Low starting wage (close to minimum) for a job that demands a lot from its employees (Starbucks has a higher starting hourly pay)
    (2) Little options for career advancement
    (3) Few to none educational opportunities
    (4) Small company with micro-management problems: overreach from DMs
    (5) Environmental concern: too much plastic waste generated (but that's more of a cultural issue)

    Advice to Management

Consider creating assistant manager positions. Doing so would provide opportunities for advancement. Also, hire starting salaries would likely attract more motivated employees. Lastly, managers should not have to work 6 out of seven days per week. My managers in the past have become burnt out from this every demanding schedule. It also showed a lack of trust in the senior members of the staff while the manager are away (might creating assistant manager positions solve this problem?).

I worked at Port City Java part-time

    Pros

Laid back, friendly atmosphere, good coffee

    Cons

all black uniforms are not great, especially since all black comfortable shoes are hard to come by. Also there was no set breaks which kinda sucked, not sure if that was just the owner of this particular PCJ or all.

I have been working at Port City Java part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I had this part-time job while I was in high school, and they were accommodating to my school hours. I had never been a barista before, and they made the learning process very easy for me. Most of the customers were very friendly.

    Cons

Although my manager was thorough and efficient, she wasn't very friendly (to say the least.) It made the job miserable at times when she was working, but I don't believe that she is still working for Port City Java. Also, although most of the customers were very friendly, I experienced several less-than-polite coffee snob situations. (It comes with the territory.)

I worked at Port City Java part-time

    Pros

It is okay for a college job

    Cons

CEO does not care about quality, just being cheap and fast. Coffee is over-roasted (because all they care about is speed). Results in no flavor profile in brewed drinks. They just want to be like Starbucks.

    Advice to Management

Make a better product. Get a new CEO.

I worked at Port City Java full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Coworkers come off as nice.... for the most part. Most customers are decent. Short shifts if that's what you're looking for.

    Cons

Tips and pay are awful at most stores unless it's ridiculously busy for your entire shift. Baristas do a ridiculous amount of work for very very low pay. Everything from food prep to scrubbing toilets.

    Advice to Management

Don't belittle your staff. Consider treating people who work under you a little better. You wonder why the turn over rate is so high...... also maybe consider more compensation for your employees.

    Pros

Great flexibility because of how well rounded and wholesome this company has been since its inception

    Cons

My PCJ Aramark co-employment was a perpetual line of customers wilst Aramark management made the best coffee shop in the world often unbearable to work at.

    Advice to Management

the internet is a beautiful thing... have your ceo train every one of your employees and he will be rich!

I worked at Port City Java full-time

    Pros

Fun with customers, cohesive and efficient work crew, happy environment, great perks, tips, clean, raises

    Cons

All stores are different. It depends on who owns and runs the partifular franchise and the kind of people hired. My store was great!!

    Advice to Management

As a manager myself, I would teach ownership, so to speak, to new employees. It gave them a sense of pride in their work, they were acknowledge and encouraged for jobs well done and for their customer service. A clean, happy and friendly atmosphere is what brings in your customers besides the high quality products you serve. Keep and maintain a high standard so customers and employees alike know the place they come to and work is special. All this in relation to efficient service, and the cohesiveness of your team turns your customer count into high numbers.

    Pros

The coworkers are great people, mostly students.
