    Pros

Great flexibility because of how well rounded and wholesome this company has been since its inception

    Cons

My PCJ Aramark co-employment was a perpetual line of customers wilst Aramark management made the best coffee shop in the world often unbearable to work at.

    Pros

The coworkers are great people, mostly students.

    Cons

No possibility of getting a raise unless you become a supervisor. They throw away disgusting amounts of food which should be composted.

    Advice to Management

please find a way to stop wasting so much food.

    Pros

Every store differs but I enjoyed fun and, for the most part, motivated co-workers.
My particular manager cared about employees and offered helpful feedback.
Opportunity to engage with community and really get to know guests on a personal level.
Classic part-time job but is way more fulfilling than most.

    Cons

PCJ tends to be a "stingy" company and does not offer great employee benefits and raises are tough to come by.

    Advice to Management

Try to give employees even a few more benefits!

I worked at Port City Java part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I really liked that it was a smaller chain coffee shop. They still had the artisan espresso maker vs. the new automatic machines. The coffee and recipes were very unique and original and our customers had a deep appreciation for that. A majority of our customers were every day regulars because we treated everyone like family. I still remember some of them going out of their way to bring us Christmas presents or birthday presents. We had the best team working there especially my manager, and in my two years there never once did I dread going to work.

    Cons

When the economy got bad, unfortunately the shop I was working at was one of the ones that closed down. All of the rest of the shops were back in Wilmington. I completely changed career paths because it just wouldn't be the same working at any other coffee house.

    Pros

    - most managers are awesome
    - flexible with schedules and hours
    - friendly atmosphere

    Cons

    - tips suck at most locations
    - don't offer benefits but then again it's hard to find a place in Wilmington that does
    - hard to get shifts covered

I worked at Port City Java full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Being a barista was a great job to support myself in college off of. I like the warm environment corporate has tried to establish. We were not allowed to refer to people as "customers" but only as "guests." The home-like, friendly ideals of PCJ are in the right place but are not present at many of the local stores.

    Cons

I have nothing personal against the organization, just a unique experience... I had a supervisor who only hired attractive brunette females. After spending a year there with a previous employer, I watched my male and non-brunette female co-workers trickle out as their hours were cut or they began to be dissatisfied with the work environment. As I soon became the senior employee, I thought that I was next in line for a slight pay increase as a shift leader or possibly assistant manager. Instead, another young brunette was hired to fill the position on the spot. Unfortunately for her, she dyed her hair blonde before her first day and did not receive any preferential treatment! After getting my savings to a decent point, I quit because despite my loyalty and hard work ethic, I too noticed that my hours began to be slashed to make room for more incompetent eye candy for my boss.

    Advice to Management

Oversee the actions of store managers more carefully before a great brand could fail.
