I have been working at Scomi Group (More than a year)

    Pros

Travel 50% of the time. Educated Business Unit sales engineers, service engineers and customers about Scomi equipment. Head office located in Malaysia with Business Units in Thailand, Russia, Australia, UAE, Saudi, Oman, Africa, China, Indonesia and many more countries.

    Cons

New equipment supplied to Business Units with a group of inexperienced sales, service and middle management employees, much like a start up company that needed to hit the ground running - good for me but not so good for the company in the short run. Oil & Gas industry and company lay off required.

    Advice to Management

Mistake to sell USA, Mexico and Brazil Business Units. It will be hard and lengthly effort to re-enter these markets when 5 year non-compete clause is completed.

I have been working at Scomi Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good learning platform for the trainee.

    Cons

Most of the top of management didn't come from an engineering background. Hence the lack of technical knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Most of the top management age with the company. Need to groom more young talent to bridge the age gap between top and middle management

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

    Fantastic employer branding
    Great CEO- Shah Hakim's engagement
    Great employee engagement activities
Good talent development and succession planning
    Invest on employees training program

    Cons

very Malaysian "way" of working - laid back, favouritism, back door approach
Too much of investment on Expats; expats do not build local successor in order to protect their employment
Senior Leadership consist the same repeated faces. All that is done is to rotate the senior leader from one role to another regardless their internal reputation and capability.
Senior Leaders who were openly making money through project execution, procurement and business development were still kept in the organisation and given a higher position
There is no proper business plan to increase to develop the organisation

    Advice to Management

You need a big turnaround of your senior leadership team. Scomi needs to build green field actively and invest in local talents.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Scomi Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The management gives trust in its employees to make decision and carry out the actions based on that decision. In my department at least. This makes my work relatively easy with not many red tapes. Politics is not prevalent like in big GLCs. Here we try to keep up with the project deliveries, working under pressure is fun with cooperating and competent team members.

    Cons

Cash flow is a real issue, we have delays due to non-deliveries of production material. It is up to the employees to think of a way to make things happen with lack of funds. My team does a lot of kaizen activities, we manage by using scrap materials, and building our own tools instead of buying them.

    Advice to Management

Get your financial management right, and please do serious consideration when doing project costing. From what I hear some of our projects were under quoted. Thus either very thin margin which is easily eaten up by delays and cost increase by suppliers.
