    Pros

Regular raises and bonuses. There are many nice, hardworking people at SmartSign. Unfortunately not enough of them are at the top.

There are genuine friendships made within departments (not solely based on commiserating, but that's certainly a foundation for many). Most people who work here deserve better but have lost motivation.

    Cons

You should go into this job with a short-term mindset. Get in, make some money, get out, go somewhere better.

There is a lack of transparency between the C-Suite and their employees, which I assume is because there's no clear vision of where company is headed. Probably towards being sold. That could be for the best, as there's a large group of people who, for all their complaining and low morale, have stuck around out of comfort and routine.

Back to management, where there's no apparent rhyme or reason behind "strategic" decisions. As a whole, the mindset of this company is outdated. There's not enough regard for the well-being of SmartSign employees (no paid maternity leave!), very little flexibility and understanding when it comes to inclement weather, appointments, etc. Every single minute of work missed is expected to be made up, even if tasks are completed. Do not expect summer Fridays or federal holidays off. There's no leaving early because you've finished all your work for the day. They are NOT generous in terms of time off, with very little regard for employees who need to travel around the holidays.

Overall, it's an uneasy, distrustful environment, both of management towards staff and vice versa. It's not until you've found a better opportunity that you fully realize how toxic this place is. You won't be rewarded for going above and beyond, and the atmosphere overall is stagnant and deflating.

    Advice to Management

When those at the top can't set an appropriate standard for professionalism, tolerance, and hygiene, do they really expect others to follow suit?

    Pros

SmartSign is a great company to work for if you are fresh out of college, or if you are in between jobs.

    Cons

There is NO structure at SmartSign! Absolutely none! Some employees who have been there for years gets the short end of the stick, but if you are new and have the "right type of background" the red carpet is rolled out for you.

You cannot move up in SmartSign, so don't get too comfortable or 3 years later you will look up and still be in the same position.

If you didn't attend a "good school" you are not going to make it farther than maybe customer service or sales.

The owner is a really nice man, but he's very aloof of the real issues that are going on in his company.

    Advice to Management

Start paying attention more to your employees then just the dollar amount. If employees are coming to you with constructive criticism, stop ignoring what the employees are saying.

    Pros

SmartSign is a great, profitable company with a beautiful, new office (although in need of a little decorating). Like people said in the other reviews, you'll meet a lot of brilliant people with smart, strong ideas. It's a small, close knit group, and it'll take a bit to get acclimated, but it's like a family. Get ready to do a lot of good work, make some friends and get a little silly at the Christmas party.

    Cons

Sigh. Did I mention this place is like a family?

There's no denying they know business, but they're not great with people. There is constant, conflicting information swirling around about the simplest things like sick day policies. You'll rely on the grapevine for information because that's where you'll get the most honest report on how you're doing and what the company plans on working on next. A collegial atmosphere can quickly feel like middle school. A recent hire was lauded as a great choice because they "wasted so much time trying to find a decent woman of color."

Get ready for paranoia, tantrums, and tense meetings that feel more like staring contests. You'll have a sense of what seems like flexibility, where you're producing like crazy one day and fired the next. Beware of coworkers masquerading as management, who are so obsessed with their own sense of self-righteousness, they will stoop to base machinations like spying and harassment to get their own way. Productivity is based not on how much you get done each day, but rather how much time you spend physically at your desk. And I hope you like your desk chair, because you'll be in it until 6 pm each and every Friday.

    Advice to Management

You have an amazing group of ambitious, qualified people in the office. Listen to them if you want to keep them around.

    Pros

The company had an amazing pool of talent. The most intelligent, creative individuals work here. It is a joy to their ideas come together. The offices are brand new and really stand out.

    Cons

They have horrible management processes. There is no HR. None whatsoever. It feels like an episode of "The Office". Something minor -- who sends out what emails, who had the sale, what is going to be eaten for birthday lunch -- blows up into a major event. There is not always a clear direction for the work that is being done. Everything feels reactive.

    Advice to Management

    Hire HR -- yesterday.

    Pros

Fun, young, relaxed environment. Great for if you're just out of college or even if you have a few years of experience and want to learn about web marketing. As the below review said it's forward thinking. Good people for the most part, you'll make friends. I think given the collaborative, 'flat' style for both sales and marketing teams, it's easy to be happy there. CEO and CFO (was rarely there when I was there) are great people, other senior partners more distant but also good guys. Company events (team builders, Xmas party) incredibly fun.

    Cons

Not much room for advancement other than sales, tendency to always work on the same thing, flexibility but also stingy with days off (barely any major holidays...not even MLK, 10 days unless it's 3 years), really easy to get too comfortable and stuck there, mostly because you like the people you work with. CEO is great guy but checks in constantly, sometimes 3 times a day. Paranoid environment-no one knew what anyone else did, which was weird. I don't know if this is a 'con' necessarily but most of the company heads are extreme workaholics, meaning they'll mainly only talk to you about work.

    Advice to Management

Provide more transparency and opportunity for progression.

I have been working at Smartsign.com as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Creative, forward-thinking, innovative atmosphere- felt very young and easy to make new suggestions to the higher ups in the company. I loved my experience here as an intern.

    Cons

location of offices was not ideal for someone coming from other parts of Brooklyn- probably easier if in Manhattan and could take any number of trains one or two stops to get in to work.
