A good company gone downhill

Pros

The people at Sponge are awesome: supportive, intelligent, lots to learn from. The atmosphere is generally good: there's very little blame-shifting and a lot of mentoring for everyone who is eager to better themselves. Peer-to-peer collaboration is excellent.

Cons

Some of the management are severely lacking in education and even literacy. They are also the ones who tell you "it's not my job to [insert action here]". Lots of talkers and very few doers among the leadership. Getting rid of people who have been there long term and who know the business best. I've taken a look and they are currently recruiting 4 (four!) people for the job I was doing on my own.

Pros

Some genuinely nice and talented people work within this organisation. Ambitious and bold.

Cons

Throughout my time with the organization, I witnessed a puzzling cycle of recruitment and redundancy affecting the same hires consistently across all divisions — new hires one month, followed exits soon after. This recurring pattern is rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of accurately forecasting and aligning projects with predictions. This lack of comprehension extends to understanding the progress and profitability of bespoke work, resulting in an overall lack of clarity about the organization's operational busyness and influencing the aforementioned hiring strategy. The entire delivery process exhibits flaws that are unexpected for a company of this size. This situation is further exacerbated by incomplete, ever-changing processes and working practices. Coupled with a scarcity of experience in senior positions. The organizational culture propels certain individuals forward but falters in supporting constructive challenges. Instead, a hero culture emerges, wherein the same heroes in influential positions take the acclaim for resolving project issues. Given the outlined challenges, I would advise serious caution when considering a position within the Sponge PM team. The persisting "last in, first out" dynamic remains a persistent concern as does the lack of leadership and clarity of direction. Until these issues are effectively resolved, venturing into this team is a gamble, potentially jeopardizing job security if you are leaving a stable position.

Pros

The people are the best thing.

Cons

Where to start! I had high hopes working for such a reputable company, but that reputation is long gone. There is a complete disregard for people, skillsets and abilities - hiring and firing in one breath. Very poor project control (UK), forecasting and reporting in place that means the company can't operate correctly. Lunging from one month to the next trying to recognise revenue. Job security is not a thing - numbers don't add up? Make some more redundancies - it all leads to insecurity amongst remaining staff who wonder if they will be next, which means you aren't getting the best out of your people. Hiring and making redundancies within the same month is idiotic man management.
