I worked at Stardock Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A great place to for developers who like to broaden their skill set. Great company culture. Fun atmosphere.

    Cons

Not a place to go if you want to wait to be told what to do. Employees are given objectives and expected to solve them with minimal hand holding.

    Advice to Management

More mentoring for younger staff. Don't move engineers between projects if possible.

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Casual and family-friendly work environment, creative and highly intelligent co-workers, exciting IP to work on and develop, excellent partnerships continuing to evolve.

    Cons

It can be difficult to get solid communication and have everyone on the same page, especially during high volume crunch time.

    Advice to Management

Continue recognizing the employees who are hard-working, loyal, and willing to go the extra mile for the company and its objectives. It goes a long way.

    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Stardock Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Fun Culture
-Technical Challenges (although the CEO has firmly established ideas of who is best at what, so roles will be chosen, not grown into)
    -Good Company Name Recognition
    -Makes Videogames

    Cons

    -Long Daily Hours
-Cyclic "crunch periods" (every game release)
    -Cyclic Layoffs (2010, 2015)
    -Low Base Compensation
    -Poor Healthcare Package
-High Turnover (both terminations and resignations)
-CEO/Owner likes to jump into projects and work on them temporarily. This would be fine, but the CEO/Owner is temperamental, pushy, volatile, and is fully beyond reproach due to his total ownership of the company.

    Advice to Management

-The CEO should trust the intuition of his highest performing management, and those who have professional management experience.

-CEO should stop working directly on projects. It obliterates morale.

-Calm down, treat employees like professionals instead of paid friends, and cultivate a more stable, friendly company that current and past employees can recommend.

"Incompetent senior management is out of touch with employees and market"

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Flexible with allowing personal time off
    Free coffee, drinks, snacks
    Casual environment
Paid time off to see occasional movies
    Generally nice people

    Cons

Members of senior management are family members or close friends, so neutrality is hard to find
Senior management does not have work-life balance, as a result, work-life balance cannot be expected by anyone else in the company
Senior management does not have any formal management training, as a result, they do not know how to manage people in a productive way
When a given project is completed, senior management likes to "clean house"
The company operates in feast or famine, there is no middle ground; things are either very good, or very bad
Consistent review process does not exist
Communication between departments of the company is very poor
Company's systems are a house of cards; small issues are difficult to fix and have wide-reaching effects

    Advice to Management

Senior management should consider taking leadership and management classes/seminars to learn how to manage people correctly. Hire people when you need them instead of expecting your current employees to absorb the additional workload. After you have hired people, do not let them go immediately after a project has been completed; that is what contract work is for. Respect work-life balance and you will have increased productivity.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Interesting projects that are advertised widely
Great perks like movie days, free drinks and snacks
    Nice work environment and area
    Access to decent technology

    Cons

    Very arrogant senior development staff
Extremely poor project management and QA
    Aloof executive management
Lack of foresight in technology trends
Poor benefits and compensation is low even for Michigan

    Advice to Management

Stardock really needs to reevaluate how it does things. The management is terrible and practically non existent. When projects fail to catch on in the market place newer staff members are scapegoated even if they aren't culpable.

    Pros

Skilled and fun people to work with
Generally laid back environment if you are a fast worker
    Nice free snacks and drinks
Sometimes gets free half day to go see a cool movie
    Great side activities

    Cons

Leadership needs to be more respectful in many aspects
    Gotta work overtime a lot
Hard to get a review on time, so it makes it hard to advance in the company, I have seen as late as a year later.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more respectful and consistent towards employees and promises they make.
