Pros

StartEngine has managed to attract some genuinely talented and hard-working people over the years. Many employees—past and present—have gone above and beyond to help build the company into what it is today. While compensation has shifted in recent years, there was a time when offers from StartEngine were competitive and appealing. That said, don’t expect meaningful growth in salary once you’re hired—annual raises, if any, tend to be minimal.

Cons

During my time at StartEngine, I saw many people come and go—and along with them, many of their reviews posted here. I always wondered what I would write when it was my turn to be let down by the company. Now, after taking time to process and heal from the rollercoaster of my experience, I feel ready to share my thoughts. Out of concern for potential retaliation, I’ll keep my role vague. But I worked at StartEngine for several years and was involved in many areas of the business. If you’re reading this while considering a role or preparing for an interview, I strongly encourage you to pause and think carefully. What’s promised during recruitment often doesn’t reflect the reality once you’re inside. Cons of Working at StartEngine Layoffs I witnessed multiple rounds of layoffs during my time—one just two weeks before Thanksgiving, and another about a week before Christmas (on different years). In both cases, employees—including those who had been with the company for 2, 3, or even 7 years—were given just two weeks of severance. Health benefits ended at the end of the month. It was also common for employees to be abruptly reassigned to entirely new roles, often with no input or choice. Declining the change usually meant termination. For many, it felt like one day you had a job, and the next, you didn’t. The “Startup” Excuse Despite being in operation for over a decade, StartEngine still brands itself as a “startup” to justify disorganization, constant restructuring, and a lack of long-term planning. Every quarter seemed to bring a new org chart, new priorities, and little stability. Meanwhile, leadership takes home massive bonuses. To give perspective: this year, while citing financial difficulties and laying off 25% of the company, the CEO reportedly earned $1.7 million, the CMO $850K, and the CFO $600K. While I didn’t look up the exact numbers—I was frankly too nauseated—I believe they’re close or potentially higher. You can find the actual figures in the company’s SEC filings. I also recommend reading the article “Exclusive: StartEngine Mass Fires 25% of Its Workforce” on Hubtas for more insight. Work-Life Balance Although StartEngine markets itself as a remote-first company, the reality is far from flexible. Employees are expected to be constantly available—including evenings and weekends. PTO is technically offered, but in practice, it’s unevenly used. Senior employees often take extended time off with little to no coverage, placing extra burden on their teams. Inexperienced Leadership Many leaders at StartEngine started as interns and climbed the ranks internally. While internal growth can be great, the lack of outside experience often leads to poor planning, reactive decision-making, and a general lack of direction. At times, it felt like leadership was just “shooting in the dark,” chasing quick wins rather than building sustainable strategies. A Mission That Lost Its Way StartEngine’s mission is to “help entrepreneurs achieve their dreams.” I used to believe in that deeply. But over time, it became clear that the company prioritizes large, well-funded issuers while offering limited support to smaller startups—the very people they claim to champion. What once felt like a mission-driven platform now feels more like a system designed to extract value, not create it. A Culture of Fear One of the company’s stated values is “open and honest communication,” which—honestly—is laughable. The culture is rooted in fear: fear of layoffs, fear of speaking up, fear of being replaced. Psychological safety is virtually nonexistent. Many employees keep their heads down to avoid drawing attention, and genuine career growth feels out of reach. Compliance Concerns This is something I share cautiously. It is a matter of public record that StartEngine has been fined by regulators. In 2023, FINRA fined StartEngine Capital $350,000 for crowdfunding rule violations. You can read about it in Business Wire’s article titled: “FINRA Fines Wefunder $1.4 Million for Crowdfunding Rule Violations; StartEngine Capital Separately Fined $350,000.” During my time, there were moments where I questioned the ethics or legality of certain internal decisions. I won’t speculate further—but I strongly urge prospective employees and investors to do their own research and come to their own conclusions. Final Thoughts Every company has growing pains—but transparency, respect, and leadership maturity should be the baseline, not the exception. For me, the emotional and professional toll of working at StartEngine wasn’t worth it. I hope this review helps someone else make a more informed decision than I was able to at the time.

Pros

Coworkers were solid hard working people.

Cons

The environment was overwhelmingly stressful, with a culture that prioritized speed over quality. Projects were frequently pushed out prematurely despite clear warnings from the team that they weren’t ready. Leadership valued meeting deadlines over delivering a functional product, leaving employees frustrated and overworked. If you told management something they didn’t want to hear, they would become visibly upset. A common conversation among employees was, “How are you dealing with the stress?” Employees regularly voiced concerns about excessive workloads and management’s disregard for work-life balance. It wasn’t uncommon for team members to have multiple projects dumped on them with no consideration for their existing responsibilities. East Coast employees, in particular, were often contacted late at night or on weekends, as if boundaries didn’t exist. One of the most frustrating aspects of working here was the company’s empty emphasis on being “open and honest.” In practice, it felt more like “closed and vague.” Leadership routinely withheld information and made confusing, last-minute decisions, leaving employees in the dark. During the holidays and right before bonuses, they laid off 25% of their workforce after a mass hiring spree just a few months earlier. That’s outright cold and inept leadership. I wouldn’t recommend working here.

Incompetent Leadership Team, Stay Away

Pros

Got to work with some incredibly smart and talented people at the director level and below. Very interesting industry

Cons

The leadership team has absolutely no idea what they are doing. They are all extremely unqualified and were able to get in at StartEngine early under Howard while having little to no experience on how to run a company. They get paid an absurd amount of money that they give to themselves by excluding employees in the bonus pool, which you can view in the Form C if you're curious, and don't care about any employees aside from themselves. Throughout the entire company and departments is an ongoing joke on how much they are paid for being horrible at their jobs. StartEngine preaches feedback and transparency, but if at any point you give feedback or don't bend the knee they will actively try to get rid of you regardless of performance. The leadership team continues to switch directions of the company because they keep messing up the previous quarter, even though multiple people throughout the org. will tell them before the quarter that their plan will not work. There has been a lot of amazing talent that has come through StartEngine and they all leave because of how inept the leadership team is. These are not people you want to work for and have no interest in anything but their own pockets. There is no data behind any of their reasonings and choices and they go off their "feel". They give no guidance and any question you have they'll look to Howard to find an answer. Stay away from StartEngine.
