I have been working at Stepan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are on par with the other plants in the area and the people you work with are good.

    Cons

Retirement could be better and so could management

    Advice to Management

My first job ever( when i was 16)had a 401k it had a bigger percentage match than stepan. The front line management is very inexperienced, in some cases they come in with no chemical experience and in ALL cases they are unable to help me do my job. It's kind of weird knowing more than your boss about the job they they are boss of.

I have been working at Stepan full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and some benefits (but not many). Stepan is a diverse company with plants thru out the world and many different products. Almost always makes quarterly profits.

    Cons

Stepan upper management thinks with their wallets not their brains. This locations (Millsdale) upper management has only profit on their minds, they treat the employees like dirt, lie to higher ups and blame all troubles on the workers. A person use to be able to use their brains at Millsdale and actually operate; now they are scared to do anything without getting permission from the upper management for fear of being disciplined. This causes more wastage and bad product being made due to waiting for upper management to tell a worker what to do, when management has never ran the process. This atmosphere has cause many older employees to retire early, quit or be fired and leaves new people training new people on jobs that neither of them understand. Plus the company has cut back on the actual work force (while adding extensively to management) to the point the workers are forced to hurry and work excessive hours to maintain product to fill orders. The equipment at this plant is old the employees are under trained and over worked and this could cause a problem that will cost the company more money than they saving.

    Advice to Management

Profit is good, but not to the point that lives or the environment are endangered. Get rid of these older set in their ways upper management and hire people that care about the people as well as the company

    Pros

There are great ppl on the floor. The company is financially stable and has a potential to grow. Good for a lifer.

    Cons

Not much upward or lateral mobility, even in a rotational role. Management likes to bring ppl from outside for managerial positions rather than developing existing employees. There are managers who have fancy ideas but could not deliver. Another one who only cares about getting his job done and forgets all about the staff. Few internal promotions were based on seniority, not on capability or contribution. Not good for ppl at early stage of their career or with ambition.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on the talents you have.
