A great place to work but needs some repairs in order to be competitive with the rest of the market
Dec 27, 2008 - Engineer in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Strong management. Diverse workforce and great people. Strong communicative atmosphere. Pleasant work atmosphere. Strong leadership. Employees and senior management acknowledge new ideas and give them room to grow. There a some opportunities to grow and be promoted.
Cons
Uneven salaries across the board for the same type of work. Emphasis given to experience versus productivity. No bonuses or stock offering that compensates performance of individual workers. Promotions need to be based on performance not on experience and seniority. Compensation needs to be increased for productive workers in order to retain them. No strong employee training and further education program.

Fast Paced & Scrappy; Sunk By Tough Industry
Jun 20, 2018 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Dynamic, hard-working and team-oriented environment with good balance / flexibility for start-up. Ample list of cutting-edge projects on both business and technical side of company. Meritocracy with fast advancement for high performers and minimal bias / politics. Committed to mission of US manufacturing and overall health / well-being of employees.
Cons
Brutal market with low prices and massive oversupply triggered by Chinese dumping, which impacted funding availability and every other element of business, ultimately leading Stion to close operations. Some normal communication challenges between facilities in CA & MS. Depth of manufacturing expertise / staff needed hard to achieve in US.

Squandered Potential
Dec 19, 2016 - R&D Engineer in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Investors seem to have no limit to what they will spend to keep it afloat, so if you can keep your head down there is a lot of job security. I hear some people get paid well.
Cons
No progress being made - just look at all of the press releases and note how often the factory is being brought up to nameplate capacity. CEO is rude and not above lying to get more investment. If you disagree with how things are done, you are gone. R&D is a show pony that only gets attention when the factory needs money, so don't expect to be making breakthroughs. No raises. Credit for work done is taken by upper management. No investment is made into employee training.

A small percentage of their employees are professional, excellent team players and are well organized. Working with them as a team is a rewarding experience great communication skills and good benefits. Benefits are pretty good.
Cons
The majority of their employees aren't professional, and somewhat disrespectful. Gossip among them create a somewhat hostile environment Lack of professional support from their HR manager Lack of communication at several levels, bad planning from their staff

Jul 19, 2015 - in Hattiesburg, MSRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Stion is willing to hire inexperienced and grossly unqualified people into the manufacturing plant. If you want to break into solar industry this company is a good place to apply.
Cons
if you are not from MS or the Deep South don't plan on being accepted or being supported

Former Sr. Management

Product has a lot of potential. Technology is solid and manufacturable. Continuous Improvement Environment. Automated factory and upper management loyal to top performers and hard workers.
Cons
Always struggling with funding and operating capital. Located in Mississippi - hard to attract the right talent to reach the potential of the product and facility.

Corrosive culture and incompetence
Nov 3, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Hattiesburg, MSRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-Some very hard workers in the company, particularly in sales, business development and marketing.
Cons
1) Nasty, lazy, and incompetent CEO, who drove the culture from the top of the company downward. People rarely saw or heard him in MS, and when he was there, would be nasty towards employees there. Horrible, horrible leader. 2) Generally incompetence throughout the organization - many mistakes that over time contributed to a waste of money. Notice how in press releases, the company says its products were sold out, which means it was not sales/marketing (or the Chinese) fault that the company went out of business, but poor manufacturing and expense management.
