I worked at Syclo full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Innovative company. Great work life balance. Nice pay and benefits. Wonderful management team. Great owner.

    Cons

Company got sold to SAP, and culture changed.

I worked at Syclo full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Small company that was very agile. You had great influence on the direction of the company without a bunch of red tape. If your ideas were solid, upper management would listen and many times let you run with it.

    Cons

Syclo no longer exists, we were purchased by SAP a few years back. After the merger, the mojo was lost as people and departments were assimilated into the SAP borg.

    Advice to Management

The management I reported to was a great team to work with. I don't have any complaints, they ran a great company.

I worked at Syclo full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The development team is small, but comprised of smart developers who work hard to deliver on deadlines

    Cons

Deadlines are often established without consulting the development team. This results in the dev team having to work at an unsustainable pace for long periods of time to meet demands that weren't realistic when they were made.

    Advice to Management

Empower people to achieve excellence then trust them deliver (obviously with consequences). In the long run this might prove more profitable than dictating low-level details

I worked at Syclo full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic coworkers, great company direction, and always on the cutting edge technologies.

    Cons

A little on the heavy side for workload per employee, but that seems to be everywhere.

I have been working at Syclo full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have worked for a number of software companies, but Syclo by far has been teh best ever. Far exceeded my expectations.

    Cons

There are very few downsides to Syclo, the only one that I would call out would be lack of resources to do everything we want to grow the company, but you have that with every small company.

    "Dead end job that's boring"

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Decent salary. In downtown Chicago office you can escape the Hoffman Estates environment, ran by yes men.

    Cons

Everything else. Including threats to return to Hoffman Estates office even though you were hired to work downtown.

    Advice to Management

Allow middle management to create processes, promote from within, stop quarterly meetings, match 401K, improve benefits, participate in Agile/Scrum seriously

"Just plain bad....minimal forward momentum, substandard Employee Benefits"

    • Senior Management
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Hoffman Estates, IL
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Hoffman Estates, IL
    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

    Convenient suburb location
Mobility is very interesting and impactful (but Syclo is not capitalizing)
Baseline technology is sound (but Syclo is not continually improving its technology)

    Cons

The benefit package is truly substandard....the most glaring example is ridiculously high health care costs
Syclo has not continually evolved its technology; and competition is coming up with cutting edge alternatives
Exec management has for the most part surrounded themselves by "yes" people, vs. realizing their shortcomings and hiring people to augment their skills and offer new ideas

    Advice to Management

Spend the money to offer an appropriate benefit plan to your employees; starting with healthcare
Take chances, consult with outsiders that have helped grow companies of Syclo's current size to something bigger
Analyze your competition to be able to appropriately position Syclo's technology moving forward

  11. "Syclo is a rapidly growing company in an uncertain climate expanding their customer base and mobile reach."

    Star Star Star Star Star
    • Work/Life Balance
    • Career Opportunities
    • Comp & Benefits
    • Senior Management
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Hoffman Estates, IL
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Hoffman Estates, IL

    Pros

    - Company is growing
    - Company is aligned with recession-proof customers (health care, utilities)
    - Company is willing to adapt to meet customer needs
    - Company is expanding to new markets and new platforms

    Cons

    - Lack of vertical movement
    - Company does not give raises
    - Lack of promotional opportunities from within
    - Poor benefits (no 401K matching, high health care costs)

    Advice to Management

The company has expanded in personnel and levels of management over the past year. However, upper management still operates as though the company is still a start-up. The CEO should release control of the day-to-day operations and entrust the management staff to handle these tasks.
