    Pros

If you mesh well with the team, you will do fine. It has a very long history, some employees there since the beginning basically and you want to be careful of what you say and who you say it to. If you do it right, you'll be very well taken care of. Fun groups, lots of stories, must be able to take a joke.

    Cons

If you don't mesh well, you won't last long. Either you'll be pushed out or want out. Also the company is currently unable to give a deserving SF Bay Area salary, so it can make living in that area difficult. I suggest bargaining strong with HR. If they want you, you have the upper hand.

    Pros

Stable company with a world wide reach, pushing automation into new fields of Ag, Construction, etc. Lots of people have been there 10+ years, some 20+.

    Cons

Some offices are better to work with than others. Some cultural issues and infighting between offices. Some people have been there 20+ years.

I worked at Topcon Positioning Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Topcon tries to project an image to the outside world. There are some perks because of this. Namely, you stay at 5 star hotels and resorts for conferences and company outings. If you are the type of person who doesn't have goals, doesn't want to grow your career and just wants to collect a paycheck....Topcon is perfect for you.

    Cons

Where to start....make no mistake, the other reviews are correct about the CEO. He rules as a feudal king. He is egotistical and is coddled by his inner circle. Don't be the one who suggests the emperor has no clothes....it's off with your head. The realities of the company vs what is projected, is truly night-and-day. Topcon will chew you up and spit you out. The lifestyle is brutal. The political infighting is like a high school. The Sr. VPs are either pushovers or bullies and the blood sport is supported by the King....I mean CEO. In many ways, this company is hanging by a thread. There are a few people who keep it together, but that is no way to innovate and grow in the marketplace. Also, the compensate is sub-par.

    Advice to Management

The best thing that could happen to Topcon is for a company to acquire them, clean house from the Director level up to CEO and rebuild it.

I have been working at Topcon Positioning Systems full-time

    Pros

    Unconscionable loyalty to long-time employees.

    Cons

Zero ability to manage toward goals hidden by a fluffy stream of "initiatives" without any attempt at follow-through (you'd think a golf-nut would know better!). Everything is merely to protect the illusion of success with customers and within internal cliques. Have bamboozled the ISO-9000 auditors for years and consequently have built a house of cards. The management structure has evolved into a haphazard amalgam of silos, with feudalistic mangers each protecting their "turf" at the expense of the whole. Directors exhibiting completely dysfunctional behavior are coddled and rewarded despite inflicting enormous damage on the institutions and individuals committed to proper governance. A battleground of megalomaniacs shouting, backstabbing, and working secret deals to the detriment of customers and employees alike. DON'T COME TO WORK HERE UNLESS YOU ARE INDEPENDENTLY WEALTHY AND POSSESS THE INSTINCTS OF A PIT VIPER AND THE IMMUNITY OF AN IMMORTAL GOD - or you won't last with your optimism or your humanity intact..

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to basic management practices. Create a strategy, establish goals, and MEASURE PERFORMANCE objectively. Make the sweeping structural changes in management (Directors and VPs) necessary to compete and to attract true talent. Forget about "selling a billion dollars in revenue" and pay attention instead to making products that achieve your quality goals and satisfy your customers. Fire, on the spot, anybody who utters the phrase "We've never done it that way here".

I have been working at Topcon Positioning Systems (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    stability, close-knit culture and innovative

    Cons

clique-ish and career stunting as a result

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your long-term, solid-as-a-rock, loyal, hard working employees with REAL career growth. Don't offer high income to employees that are not community fostering and can't do the jobs of their subordinates and also can't justify their cost to the company. Better accountability and results expectations from your higher paid employees and also balance this against good morale and real, tangible high-value rewards.
