I worked at Unitrans part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, great coworkers, well paid for a student job, fun parties, opportunity for growth, great work experience, bragging rights

    Cons

Long mandatory meetings, lack of drivers to cover shifts forcing a lot of students to take more hours than they should be working for school/work balance, some supervisors had superiority complex

    Advice to Management

Some student managers should not have been managers and got the job because they were the only one applying which ultimately hurts the training and operations department. I think career staff could have invest more time/mentoring in student managers and encouraged more students to pursue management positions.

I have been working at Unitrans part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Very flexible hours, you can choose when you want to come in so long as you get your work done and have some overlap for meetings
-Great for students studying Computer Science and interested in Web Development.

    Cons

-The IT department isn't very stable since there is only 1 career staff and the rest are students
-There might not be anyone to teach incoming employees

    Advice to Management

-Higher another career staff for Web Development. The high turn over rate and large learning curve make it so you can only get about 2 or 3 years of solid development before you graduate and move on

I have been working at Unitrans part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Incredibly flexible hours for drivers. Since most shifts are an hour long, you can fit them in between classes no problem.

Lots of places to move up in the company. Have the opportunity become a trainer, a supervisor, or a manager, all of which are great for a resume.

I have loved my job and my positions, Unitrans has been a great building block for my other internships and my job search. It's a great job with even better people!

    Cons

Early/late shifts need to get taken.
Mandatory meetings that last usually 10 hours, three times a quarter.
Some people get so into the company that they forget to get experience elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Figure out a more efficient way to get leftover shifts taken.
Need to make the DT department more organized so people get out of training faster. Give trainees and trainers less leeway with how often training needs to happen.

Student managers need to stop treating Unitrans like a sorority. The structure of Unitrans is completely different, so making every event pg is not going to work in terms of recruitment or retention. Unitrans was a lot more fun 3-4 years ago.

I have been working at Unitrans part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work environment, flexible hours, generally a good amount of fun/friendly coworkers, and good opportunities to move up in the company

    Cons

Employee shortages mean higher amounts of work. Very little pay relative to similar jobs in transportation industry.

I worked at Unitrans part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved the company culture!! The majority of the employees are students and everyone is so friendly and charismatic. The passengers you encounter on a daily basis are college students which can be awesome when you see your lab partner or roommate and simply brag that you can drive a 40 ft. bus. The other passengers are the Davis residents and it's such a warming encounter as they tell you stories about their town and give great recommendations of what to do and where to eat/drink.

    Cons

There are long meetings bi-quarterly; it's pretty much where everyone is mandated to take over the leftover shifts that no one wants to take (i.e., 9 pm - 12 am shifts or 5 - 9 am shifts).

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing!! I stuck around for 4 years and the summer after graduating and have never regretted having this job! :)

    I worked at Unitrans full-time

    Pros

Highest paid student job at UCD, flexible hours, make your own schedule, become part of a community.

    Cons

Sometimes work more hours than you want, get stuck with bad shifts as a newbie, everyone must attend super long meetings held 3x per quarter

    Advice to Management

Find ways to make mandatory meetings shorter. Give new employees at least a couple good shifts. Make weekend shifts weekly (not one times) like they used to be.
