Pros

While it might be cliche, the caliber of people at Upstatement is a huge draw. Every single person is thoughtful, engaged, self-aware, kind, and doing their best. The agency has an impressive client list, "no jerks" client policy, commitment to work-life balance. Great place to contribute to the craft of building a business, with ample opportunity to provide feedback and pilot new ideas.

Cons

The company has grown substantially and is actively working on building out operational support for employees generally and project teams specifically. Senior leadership is stretched across creative and operational work, so the pace of change + improvement can be slower than the timeline an employee might hope for. Diversity across race, gender, and sexuality at senior levels has a lot of room for improvement. Because employees tend to stay here a long time, most diversity increases happen through growth rather than turnover, which slows the rate at which the company broadens its representation and perspectives.

Pros

Upstatement is always evolving, but over the course of my two years here, these things remain true: - Supportive leadership team - Transparency around the company’s status and goals - The right balance of autonomy & guidance - Safe, positive, and collaborative work environment - Work/life balance - Strong processes in place, with constant re-evaluation for improvement - High-quality work - Interesting projects - Fair compensation - Talented people

Cons

No company is perfect, and Upstatement knows that. Any feedback I've given the leadership team in the past has been listened to and addressed in some way. Moving forward, I think the biggest opportunity for improvement is around the way projects are scoped and resourced, which can feel chaotic at times.

Pros

Cool high-profile clients. Talented and smart coworkers. Extremely high quality work. Really friendly, supportive, autonomous environment. Nights and weekend work is rare. Good benefits. There's room to learn and grow. Beautiful office and fun conversations in Slack. Just a genuinely good place among many "okay" Boston agencies.

Cons

Senior leadership is not super experienced and sometimes too busy. That shows when they have drama between themselves, in some employee turnover, or when company-wide initiatives happen. All of these can be clunky at the least and harmful or hurtful occasionally. No $$ bonuses, even at the holidays last year.
