I have been working at VACCO full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to work in the Space Industry. Truly exciting products. Great hours (every Friday off), but many work on Fridays anyway. High ethical standards for most (but not all) upper management.

    Cons

Lack of control on resource allocation and prioritization. Constantly a juggle to get the hottest fire out. No appropriate SIOP or resource loading applied across all departments to create a uniform effort on work prioritization and resource loading.
High degree of favoritism. Unfair compensation, depending on the department you are in. If your manager can fight for you, great. If not, don't expect any benefits, perks or raises for being a star employee. Very few managers who actually fight to keep their people happy.

    Advice to Management

Make the goals achievable. If you make a commitment, follow thru with resources and backup. Don't rule by favoritism. Hold the upper to middle managers accountable. Create (and execute) on a strategy to actually deliver on the stuff you win successfully.

I have been working at VACCO full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. 4/40 Workweek is a plus

    Cons

Poor upward growth, old way of doing things, some areas aren't willing to change and move forward in processes that are outdated.

    Advice to Management

Allow your staff to be able to move upward.

I have been working at VACCO full-time

    Pros

4 day work week, great co-workers, respectful employees, solid engineering team.

    Cons

No formal training for jobs- sink or swim pretty much but there are individuals that will help. Also, you tend to feel stuck without much advancement in career path or investing in young talent for managerial positions. This is a great place to work if you are satisfied with your state of living and want to cruise to retirement.

    Advice to Management

Invest in younger employees and identify future business leaders for the company

I worked at VACCO (More than a year)

    Pros

The president (Tony) is engaged, and ensures that policies and perks are in place to keep a happy company

    Cons

Management (below Tony) spends to much time jockeying for other managers duties. The management creates a CYA culture that basically ensures that deadlines will always be missed.

    Advice to Management

Bring in outside consultants to actually evaluate the both the managers and the information they provide you for a 3-6 month term. Have ESCO bring in some of their top-tier consultants to assist in the evaluation.

I worked at VACCO full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A good variety of products to work on. 4/10 work schedule. They give you a turkey at Christmas. There are some very nice people there. That's about all I can say positive.

    Cons

Poor pay for the complexity of work. The wages are far below industry standard. I got literally tricked by the employment agency as to what my pay would be. I turned down 7 other offers . When I made permanent, VACCO refused a raise. I stayed on a few more years and got 3% each year. Which I'm sure is the most they give out. Old, outdated equipment and employees. A lot of old dudes who sleep (yes, you read that correctly) all week in order to come in for OT Fri-Sat. If you're young and motivated, expect to outpace everyone there. You wont get compensated, you'll just run out of work, as planning is established around lazy employees. Highly beauracratic processes. They will continue to struggle with a part that is known to be difficult to manufacture, rather than submit a drawing change to the customer. Definitely an old-guard contract driven company. Terrible watered down coffee that you have to pay for.

    Advice to Management

Pay those that perform. Terminate those that don't. These days, technician jobs start in the $20s for less experienced techs. Those with experience get upwards of that. Wages are as outdated as the analog test equipment.

    Cons

Quality Engineering Department and Upper Management need overhaul.

    Advice to Management

The Quality and production facilities need to be more streamlined to help the engineers, buyers and contractors to work more efficiently.

I have been working at VACCO full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

VACCO has some really interesting projects from space to navy applications. For the most part, everyone is very nice, helpful and easy to get along with. As a small company, there are many opportunities to learn very quickly.

    Cons

Management is extremely disconnected from those on the floor. Some do not take the time to understand what is going on and to relate the their employees which is causing resentment. They are a company that is trying to break into bigger business, but is not looking ahead to put systems in place to accommodate the larger business and this is also putting a strain on the relationship between the people on the floor and management. The president needs to open his eyes or get replaced for real change to benefit this company.

    Advice to Management

Understand the nuances of what is happening on the floor and what you are asking for. Understand the needs and concerns of your employees and listen to them to help grow the company.
Management needs a system in place to be held accountable just as all the employees themselves are held accountable.
