I have been working at Vitria Technology full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Compensation is not the worst.

    Cons

    - This is a difficult company to navigate because of layers of history. The company had a successful past over 15 years ago, and it is still holding on to the possible good old days while trying to reinvent itself.
    - The company is basically owned and run by a couple (CEO and CTO) which is probably the source of most of the problems. Both are not good motivators or leaders. The CEO is not transparent and likes to play games.
    - For example, the company owns and conduct development with a large team of developers in China. This is done because of cost. However, the China company operates under a different name and there is no free transfer of knowledge or information between US and China. Strange.
    - Work culture is inconsistent. The new employees are expected to work from the office yet many older employees work from home. It operates as if there are 2 cultures and 2 companies.

    Advice to Management

I am not going to suggest that the owners/founders quit because that is unrealistic. I would suggest changing the name of the company and not drag its history and baggage.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Nothing to mention. Only pro was when recent VP of product marketing repositioned and innovated a new way of driving value with analytics value chain. The fact that he resigned explains how I bad the company is.

    Cons

Management team is clueless- founders, sales and solutions. They focus more on slides than customers.

    Advice to Management

exit strategy with new management team

Working on the latest technologies in big data, streaming analytics and real-time automation
Highly relevant, scaleable and mature product set
Has some amazing references and use cases in production

    Cons

Has focused deeply on engineering and getting the product stack right vs investing in sales and marketing
Company name is most associated with real-time messaging vs the current product line for streaming analytics or predictive analytics, machine learning etc.

    Pros

Met some great people. They were the ones in the trenches solving real world problems.

    Cons

Sr Management is clueless. An exec with the initials BM is responsible for destroying the services arm of the company, which by the way, accounted for 85% of revenues up thru 2008. New products have floundered and the reactive marketing ensures that Vitria remains 2-3 years behind the technology curve.

    Advice to Management

Focus on something and develop a makes-sense go to market strategy. Lots of brain power in the tech area, but clueless marketing and management talent will hold this company back.

Going private a few years ago only hides this,.

    Pros

Small company based in Sunnyvale. Company has some exciting technology around Adobe Flex. Strong activity in Federal area driving product direction.

    Cons

Small private company. It is difficult to tell how sales are going since going private. Product direction seems to be haphazard in that new features are added to products without the core functionality being nailed down.

    Advice to Management

Get a stable product out to the market. I remember the Business Ware product and it was excellent but the experience I've heard recently by former employees is that M3O is a great product but not as well baked as BusinessWare is/was.
