Pros

There is a great sense of team work and camaraderie amongst those who work here, and it makes the days very enjoyable. Each individual has a passion for Meteorology, and wants to use that passion to help others make informed decisions about their operations as it pertains to weather. Management wants to see individuals be successful, and gives them the tools they need to be successful. There are opportunities to move up within, and suggestions to help make the company better are always welcomed and listened to. You also learn so much about weather patterns around the world, which is as good as it gets. The company is located in the Capital Region of Upstate New York, which is a fantastic place to live, work, play, and raise a family. You are never far from many activities to do, or the peace and quiet of the Adirondacks, if that is what you prefer. It is also conveniently located 3 hours north of New York City, 3 hours west of Boston, and 3 hours south of Montreal.

Cons

Rotating shift work and working on holiday's are both realities in the field of Meteorology, and this is not unique to Weather Routing (or any other private sector company, or the NWS, etc). However, the company is flexible and does their best to accommodate any scheduling conflicts you may have, and also allows you to have either Thanksgiving or Christmas off each year (and you will rotate between the two holidays). On the busiest of days, especially during tropical seasons, the workload can be higher, but the team work makes the dream work, and management makes sure that individuals are known of a job well done.

Pros

If you enjoy hands on forecasting and working directly, one on one with clients, then Weather Routing can offer you a lot. The company continues to grow, and has been adding and hiring for numerous positions. If you show interest in moving up in the company, there is room to do this. I've enjoyed moving up in the company in the 20 years I have worked here, from a junior forecaster to an operations manager, and this is the kind of work that I have wanted to do since I was young. The work has real world impacts here as we keep our clients and their property safe. No two days are the same and you won't be bored. This is a good work-life balance and the company was very accommodating when I had several medical issues to deal with. Benefits, bonuses, health insurance, and retirement contributions are top notch. There's a great team to work with who are all passionate about marine weather forecasting. If you have suggestions for new products or techniques, management is always open to listening to them and implementing them if practical. The company also provides social opportunities like ski nights, hockey nights, bowling nights, etc. Finally, living in the Lake George-Saratoga region is terrific - there's so much to do, like skiing, hiking, biking, entertainment, restaurants, access to major cities, etc - I believe that this is one of the best places in the country to live.

Cons

There are definitely active days due to heavy weather events where there is a lot to do to keep our clients safe. Having good stress management skills can help deal with this, but this is where we shine with our best work, and this is a part of being an operations meteorologist. Management recognizes the hard work put in during these times and rewards accordingly.

Pros

Challenging but rewarding work environment, where you will gain experience in weather forecasting on all scales, tropical cyclone forecasting, and climatology across the entire globe. The company has grown significantly over the past few years and placed a solid effort on making WRI a better place to work for everyone. There are 35+ meteorologists with minimum B.S. Degree in Meteorology working full time on rotating shifts, some with 20+ years experience in marine forecasting. Good people and the work never gets boring + shifts fly by. Benefits are good and 2-3 cash bonuses a year on top of salary is a nice perk as well!

Cons

Similar to air traffic controller, the job can be stressful at times, and as such its not for everyone. In my opinion however the knowledge and skills gained here were well worth it - you just can't learn this stuff in school.
