Anthem and Beacon launch series of programs for Mental Health Awareness Month.
Significant mental health challenges, such as feelings of isolation and loneliness, can increase during times of public health emergencies like COVID-19. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Briana Duffy, regional president for Beacon Health Options’ west region provides some tips on staying connected.
Catastrophes, including public health emergencies such as COVID-19, affect mental health, both at the individual and population levels. Indeed, people experience a wide range of mental health issues during and long after emergencies, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Such emergencies, by definition, are unexpected and out of an individual’s control, which in the case of COVID-19 (i.e., coronavirus), can lead to stress and anxiety. While you may not be able to control the trajectory of the coronavirus, you can control how you respond to its potential threat.

Mark Wahlberg was on hand for the launch of the Walmart Health center in Calhoun, GA, where Beacon will provide behavioral and mental health care services. Mark’s foundation has helped educate, inspire and engage youth to be a part of the solutions to the opioid epidemic.
According to an analysis recently published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being, mindfulness-based intervention has at least a short-term positive effect for some university students. The analysis revealed that distress was "significantly reduced" post-intervention in study participants who received a mindfulness-based intervention. In addition to distress, anxiety was also significantly reduced among participants who underwent a mindfulness-based intervention.
As part of the Beacon Gives Back Holiday Drive, Beacon employees collected 6,313 items and $1,300 in cash and gift cards for more than 20 organizations across the country that work with homeless populations. Items included socks, hats, gloves, jackets, hygiene products, non-perishables and other essential items. An additional $5,000 was sent to Mental Health America was sent to Mental Health America to support our employees' passion for the holiday drive.
