“If this works and is safe, this is the answer to heart attack—this is the cure.” In a momentous first, a patient has undergone gene-editing to lower their cholesterol. It's a huge milestone for Benchling customer Verve Therapeutics, who has been developing this single-dose cure for heart disease for the last several years. It's also the first-in-human use of base editing, in which a single letter of DNA is substituted for another, in this case, with the goal of permanently lowering a person's cholesterol levels.
