Joining a new company in a new role can be intimidating. The leaders among us bear responsibility for getting employees hired and on-boarded as quickly as possible, and ensuring they have everything needed to succeed. But, often, we don’t address how overwhelmed new hires can feel in those early days.
Between a global pandemic, raging wildfires, murder hornets and more, 2020 really put us through the wringer. Though a tough year, many consultants searched for opportunities to improve their work and expertise—and educational webinars were high on the to-do list.
Congratulations to our Little Falls, MN and Schofield, WI offices—they have been awarded the Minnesota Governors Safety Award, for the second time in a row! This year, our crews in Minnesota were also singled out for the Award of Honor, which is only bestowed on organizations with safety records at least 91% better than the industry average. Their commitment to the safety of colleagues, clients and the general public is at the heart of everything they do, and we couldn’t be more proud.
The Environmental Business Journal recognized Cascade with not one, not two, but THREE 2020 EBJ Business Achievement Awards! The two Project Merit Awards were earned by our subsidiaries, TerraTherm and Aquifer Drilling & Testing. We also received an Information Technology Award for the technology systems strategy implemented by our CIO John Michael Gross and his Information Systems team.

Many in-person events are on hold, but that doesn't mean your professional growth goals should be. Now more than ever, small industry groups offer great opportunities to meet industry colleagues and stretch your skillset.
One of the industry's leading remediations experts is Deborah Shaffer Schnell, Vice President of GeoSierra, a Cascade Company. Over the course of her 25 year career, she has worked as a consultant, founded her own company, and has been on the cutting edge of remediation innovations using trenchless permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). We're proud not only of the expertise Deborah brings to every project, but also the way she's carved space for herself (and other women) as a female leader in the environmental services industry. We invite you to join us in celebrating #WomensHistoryMonth - and the women like Deborah who are making history every day in environmental services.
Meet Joanna Esquivel, a probe operator here at Cascade. In her role, she helps delineate the areas of subsurface contamination so an effective remediation strategy can be designed and implemented. We're proud of all our hard-working employees like Joanna who are changing the face of the environmental services industry. On International Women's Day—and every day—we want to recognize and thank the women who are improving our world for everyone.
Today's blog post highlights her career and kicks off our new quarterly blog series, Women in Environmental Services. We'll be highlighting women who are carving out space for themselves in our industry, and sharing the advice they have for others who may want to do the same.

According to Director of Talent Acquisition Jessica Alexander, the answer is often "yes." In this blog post, she explains how small tweaks can make a big difference.
