This month, we’re celebrating Black excellence at Intuitive and beyond. The BLACK at Intuitive Employee Resource Group (ERG) creates an empowering and essential community, and is committed to the recruitment, employee development, and professional advancement for Black employees. Beyond Intuitive’s walls, a growing community of Black surgeons are using Intuitive’s products to provide minimally invasive care to patients from every community. “It’s important for every patient to feel represented by their physicians” says Irlna Tantchou, MD, a da Vinci colorectal surgeon. “Intuitive is committed to creating a space for me and for patients that look like me.” “We give each other support and accountability that reaffirms that we matter and challenges us to boldly reimagine and own our development in new ways,” says Kevin Crawford, clinical sales manager and member of BLACK. Intuitive joins BLACK in honoring the excellence that helps make Intuitive a place where everyone can thrive—and that drives our mission forward. Great leaders and the teams they inspire have brought Intuitive to the forefront of medical technology, enabling doctors to change patients’ lives around the world. The stakes are high, and so is the bar that we set for our leaders. They’re guided by a set of Leadership Expectations that have been in place since Intuitive’s beginnings. Mark Palmer, senior manager, Industrial Design, highlights “selfless leadership” as one of his favorite leadership expectations. As our leaders guide their teams through complex challenges, their first focus is to understand, provide transparency, and clarity of intent; their decisions aren’t based on personal agenda—it’s about what’s right, not who’s right. Mark also says that the expectation to “build strength in others” is critical. The innovation required to drive Intuitive forward means our leaders take risks on people, stretching themselves and their teams. We believe deeply that a key measure of a leader is their team’s future achievement. “These two expectations tie to what I think is the most important value for our team: active listening,” Mark says. “In other industries, designers might show up with a strong point of view or a lot of ego. I don’t think that’s appropriate for what we do here. Instead, it’s important for us to seek information, and the best way to do that is to listen. It's about seeking that understanding of our users and teammates and uncovering what they need to be successful. If we do that well, we become good pa
Why are our robotic-assisted surgical systems called da Vinci? The name pays homage to Leonardo da Vinci, the 15th century inventor, painter, philosopher, and Renaissance man. Leonardo da Vinci is widely known for advancing the study of human anatomy. He was also intrigued by mechanics and automation, which eventually led to the design of the first known robot, “Leonardo’s Robot,” which was likely made around the year 1495.
“I am excited about our progress and ongoing efforts to pursue our mission - supporting minimally invasive care to bring benefit to patients, customers, healthcare systems, while supporting our communities and being responsible stewards of the environment,” says Intuitive CEO Gary Guthart in his letter introducing our Environmental, Social, and Governance Report 2023. “The cool thing about working in service is you get to touch everything—every system, instrument, accessory, and scope—so if you start here, you can go anywhere.” In her almost decade at Intuitive, Sahar Ibarra has taken advantage of that opportunity, growing into different roles across Manufacturing Operations, where she’s now a senior manager. She’s also “grown up” at Intuitive, earning her master’s with help from our tuition reimbursement program and becoming the leader she always wanted to be. And with two kids under two, she relies on her team not only for their collaboration on complex engineering challenges, but also for their support as fellow parents and generous coworkers. “When you have something personal going on, you can go take care of that and do what you need to do, and there will be other people to step in and keep pushing the mission forward—putting patients first.” Read Sahar’s story: https://lnkd.in/eP2u6RNC
