In 1964, former U.S. Senator William Blakley and his wife, Villa, donated two large ranches to Scottish Rite for Children to support the institution with endowment income. This unprecedented gift allowed for staff to begin plans for the construction of a new facility. The board of trustees at the time decided to invest the ranch income until sufficient capital was available to construct a hospital that was free of debt, which they did in 1977. Located across the street from the original hospital, the six-story 400,000 square foot facility was designed to be child-friendly and comforting to patients. Sitting on 15 acres, the Dallas campus has ample space for playgrounds and parks and also enjoys historic Reverchon Park in its backyard. Tour the Dallas campus inpatient unit with nurse Katy Jones.

According to Chief Medical Officer B. Stephens “Steve” Richards, M.D., the people at Scottish Rite for Children generate an unimaginable amount of positive energy that is absorbed by the families who enter our doors. “Doing the right thing for our pediatric patients and their parents, and doing so with warmth and expertise, gives me a great deal of personal satisfaction and motivation,” Richards says. During his more than 30-year tenure, he has focused on clubfoot, foot disorders and scoliosis. He has been active in more than a dozen professional organizations, including being named president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America in 2008-2009 and president of the Scoliosis Research Society in 2011-2012. “Working at Scottish Rite is a rewarding experience,” Richards says. “I go home with a smile on my face!” Read more about Scottish Rite researchers, including Dr. Richards, who recently discovered a gene contributing to clubfoot.
