Did you know that our body's reaction to an infection happens two or three days before the pathogen can even be detected? Dr. Eric Van Gieson discusses DARPA’s goal of exploring methods to detect and control disease threats through the Epigenetic CHaracterization and Observation (ECHO) project, researching and developing technology with Fluidigm that allows us to use our own epigenetics for early detection. “We felt that some of the technology platforms we were working with (such as technology developed by Fluidigm, Inc.) offered an asymmetric advantage over other technologies to allow us to do high throughput testing and do very specific saliva-based testing,” he says. Fluidigm’s ongoing collaboration with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and its ECHO program includes financial support for development of innovative programs based on our #microfluidics #technology. Here’s his interview with Forbes: https://lnkd.in/gFpWvxC

38-parameter #CyTOF study of #SARSCoV2 infection in pregnant women - Researcher Andrea Cossarizza and team have published a preprint article on an in-depth study that used CyTOF® technology and the Maxpar® Direct™ Immune Profiling Assay™ to examine the severity of infection and clinical outcomes in pregnant women with #COVID19. Pregnant women with or without COVID-19 displayed a similar peripheral blood cell landscape distribution with differing levels of low-density #granulocytes. The increase of anti-inflammatory #cytokine that occurs during pregnancy and protects the fetus may also protect women from #cytokinestorm and hyperinflammation during infection. https://lnkd.in/g-SyKQF
New #clinicaltrial update - Unity Health Toronto will profile known and novel #biomarkers in blood of #COVID19 patients to characterize the host response to SARS-CoV-2 over time and in response to treatment. Fixed whole blood samples will be analyzed with #CyTOF technology. The group aims to understand why patients have different phenotypes and disease presentations over time and how patients are responding to medications being tested in #clinicaltrials. An interesting look at #immuneresponse to #malaria infection, comparing Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum, from University of Edinburgh. Congratulations to Florian Bach, Philip Spence and team on their publication! Using #CyTOF technology, #RNAseq and plasma protein profiling, the team analyzed #Tcell activation and proliferation between the species to understand disparities in disease severity. https://lnkd.in/ggaBjHa
It’s so easy… Unlike pre-spotted biochips, IFCs enable researchers to load them in the laboratory with assays, both those of their own design and pre-optimized reagents from Fluidigm. The precision of #microfluidics engineering explained: https://lnkd.in/gBg2dCC
#Experiments on IFCs require a fraction of the sample and reagents needed for microplates because IFCs are precisely fabricated in microscopic dimensions with extremely accurate volumetric chambers. See how IFCs compare to 96-well plates – a single IFC accomplishes the same thing as 96 of the 96-well plates, or 9,216 wells. How can the new cloud-based LCM digital pathology solution offer spatial insights within heterogeneous tissue microenvironment? It’s easy as 1-2-3. 1 - Perform tissue slide scanning for slide digitalization. 2 - Upload into the cloud for case reviews and to select regions of interest remotely anytime and anywhere (office, home, or while traveling). 3 - Use laser capture microdissection to isolate regions of interest for downstream analysis. Join us for an open panel discussion on April 8 with leading research pathologists on how to address the challenges of profiling the tissue microenvironment down to the single-cell level. Fantastic work by University of California, San Francisco researchers, Lauren Levine, Matt Spitzer and team, who used #masscytometry to help understand the metabolic states of rare, early-activated #Tcells, pairing quantification of metabolic regulators at #singlecell resolution in parallel with cell signaling, proliferation, and effector function: https://lnkd.in/gv8upYh The 43-marker mouse panel and 36-marker human panel contained marker types by: #Phenotyping markers – including metabolic proteins and T cell subsets #Functional markers – including T cell exhaustion and cytolytic molecules #Signaling markers – including T cell activation and T cell proliferation Revealing a distinct metabolic state in these cells as they transition to activated memory and effector T cells offers insight into when and how T cells prepare for differentiation. For example, CAR T cells exhibit this behavior upon infusion into patients. “The study demonstrates the utility of single-cell metabolic analysis by mass cytometry to identify metabolic adaptations of immune cell populations in vivo and pr
