Ready, set, recycle! Today marks the first day of this year's Trex® Plastic Film Recycling Challenge, where schools across the country compete against each other to recycle the most plastic film (think grocery bags). In addition to gaining a better understanding and appreciation for the importance of recycling, students have the chance to earn Trex products and cash prizes for their schools, courtesy of our generous sponsor Charter Next Generation. What sets Trex apart from most manufacturers? Bryan Fairbanks, Trex President & CEO, highlighted our use of sustainably sourced materials in our #outdoorliving products on a recent The CEO Forum Group podcast. “We bring in a highly variable raw material stream. Through our technology, equipment, know-how and culture, we’re able to provide a highly consistent product at the end of line,” he says. At Trex, building a better workforce involves expanding training and development opportunities for our employees. That’s why Trex is teaming up with Laurel Ridge Community College to offer English as a Second Language courses to employees. ESL classes help Spanish-speaking employees boost their English proficiency and confidence in a supportive learning environment. #TrexCompany #ESL #CommunityPartnership
When it comes to teamwork, Jahi Jones says he draws many parallels between his time at Trex and as a former Division I student-wrestler at the University of Maryland. “Wrestling is a team sport, and it’s an individual sport. It is important for you to show up every day as an individual, so your team goes forward. I feel that at Trex. Everybody is a good wrestler. They all know that they have different roles, but they are on the same team,” he says. As Trex’s first Data Engineer, Jahi is creating data dashboards that collect and visualize real-time #manufacturing data. Ultimately, his insights drive decision-making efforts for Trex engineers to improve our manufacturing processes. What inspired him to apply to Trex? Jahi says he was inspired to use his skills to help grow Trex’s manufacturing analytics presence. “I was looking for a role where I could not only utilize my skills in supply chain and accounting, but also be able to have a data-driven focus," he says.
During Ravi Perisastry’s first week at Trex, he says he was told during a meeting to make more correct decisions than wrong decisions. Afterward, he felt empowered to immediately act in his new role, while prioritizing safety and integrity. “I think it’s energizing to know that you can go in and make whatever changes you need to make knowing that you get to own the results,” he says. Ravi currently serves as a Supply Chain Manager at Trex, where he leads his team to ensure that there is an adequate supply of raw material to support our production process. He also maintains a high level of inventory accuracy and implements process improvements for production efficiency. What does he enjoy the most about his job? For him, each day at Trex brings new #growth opportunities. “The environment and culture are set up here for people to go out and really test their own limits. People are open to new ideas, and we’re trying different things.”
Meet Stephanie. For the past 16 years she has educated others about Trex, our use of #recycled products and our efforts to keep hundreds of thousands of pounds of waste out of landfills each year. Currently, Stephanie leads our NexTrex® recycling program as our Materials Account Manager. And sometimes, her role allows her to bring out her creative side to educate others. “My job is in a lot of ways — fun. It’s all about just talking to people, making relationships and promoting Trex. And sometimes, that involves making a plastic skirt,” she says. The NexTrex program is designed to educate others on how Trex gives give plastic film a new life in our #outdoorliving products. She also works with wood suppliers to acquire materials to make our products, in addition to organizing Trex’s annual Plastic Film Recycling Challenge for K-12 schools, which takes place annually from November to April. “When you’re promoting recycling, you feel like you’re giving back to the world. And people are thankful for that.”

Rena Maffei, Production Manager at Trex Company’s Virginia Poly Operations facility, is no stranger to filling in roles that set her up for success. “I’m kind of one of those people that if the organization needs help somewhere, and I can help or fill a hole, I’m more than happy to do so,” she says. Over 15 years, Rena’s held seven roles within Trex. “People don’t like change, generally. But for me, I don’t let it stop me from doing something. I try to think of it as an opportunity,” she says. Rena’s far from done. She was recently promoted to Production Manager for Virginia Poly Operations. There, she’ll lead our operations at the facility and a team of shift supervisors in order to meet Trex’s growing demand. Thanks, Rena, for being a part of our family. After following up on an advertisement for a forklift operator in 1992, Mike Montgomery, our Process Engineering Manager, decided to take a chance on a small, startup company located in Tampa, Florida. That company would eventually turn into #Trex. And for the past 30 years, Mike has been a part of our story. When Trex relocated to our headquarters in Winchester, Virginia, Mike followed suit, and he played an instrumental role in the startup our facilities in both Virginia and later, in Nevada. Throughout his journey, he says Trex’s family atmosphere has kept him grounded. Innately curious, he loves “understanding how the process works.” Today Mike is responsible for leading our #continuousimprovement initiatives and helping to maximize our productivity and efficiency. His favorite part — being out on the floor. Mike says loves talking to our new employees and sharing his experiences at Trex. Thanks, Mike, for being a part of our family.
