As part of the Western Communities Foundation’s 20th Anniversary National Walk for Safe Places, our branches have been stepping up in a big way through the #StepUpAndShare Social Challenge. In Victoria, we presented Backpack Buddies BC with a $1,000 donation to support their incredible work fighting child hunger and creating safe, supportive spaces for youth across British Columbia. The giving didn’t stop there! In Alberta, we also donated to Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary to support its mission of providing a safe haven for displaced wolfdogs and raising awareness about these majestic animals. Our commitment to creating safe spaces goes beyond the workplace, which is why we’re proud to support organizations that break down barriers and build stronger, safer communities for everyone.
Western Financial Group, in collaboration with Hovey Insurance & Financial Services, is proud to announce a significant contribution to the future of the Hampton community. On Thursday, June 19, a cheque for $100,000 will be presented to support the development of the new Summit Centre—a space designed to serve as a cornerstone of connection, wellness, and opportunity for residents. At Western Financial Group, our mission goes beyond providing insurance—we strive to be a trusted partner in building safer, stronger communities. This donation to the Summit Centre reflects that mission in action, helping create a space where people can gather, share ideas, and feel a deep sense of belonging.
This past Friday, three Western teams came together to volunteer at the Calgary Food Bank, and their impact was undeniable. In one day, they helped pack over 200 hampers, which will go a long way in supporting families in need across Calgary, Alberta. Did you know that in 2022 alone, the Calgary Food Bank served over 160,000 people, a significant increase from previous years due to the rising cost of living and economic challenges many families are facing. Volunteering at the Calgary Food Bank is more than just about packing hampers, it's about addressing the root issues of hunger in our community. According to their annual report, the food bank relies on the efforts of thousands of volunteers each year to provide essential food to individuals and families in crisis. We’re proud of the efforts of these volunteers and grateful to the Calgary Food Bank for all the work they do to feed the city.
This past Earth Day, our team from our Oak Bay/Victoria BC branch showed up and showed out for Earth Day Power Hour 2025, to keep their communities clean and litter-free! Together with 16 local businesses and 190 incredible volunteers, our Western Communities Foundation team contributed to: · 34 bags of garbage collected · an additional 10,000 individual pieces of litter removed, AND · a whopping 260 pounds of trash cleared from the environment! Our Oak Bay/Victoria branch also found a bicycle as part of this clean-up, and as a result, our team won the Largest Item Found Award from the 2025 Power Hour! Thank you to our teams and everyone who brought the energy and the teamwork to celebrate this year’s Earth Day and work together with our neighbors to keep our communities clean.
Last week, our teams in Brooks, Medicine Hat, Strathmore, and Bassano had the pleasure of welcoming Grant Ostir, CEO, and Darren Sinclair, SVP, National Branch Network, for site visits. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect in person, share ideas, and highlight the incredible work happening across our teams. Thank you both for your continued leadership and support, it means a lot to everyone!

Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada, and hotels can play a vital role in stopping it. When we work collaboratively with our customers, people and partners, it’s incredible what can be accomplished – we’re thankful for the acknowledgement in today’s Thompson’s Daily Insurance News Service of our sponsorship of “Not in our Hotel”– a free anti-human trafficking training program, launched by the Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association (https://www.linkedin.com/company/alberta-hotel-&-lodging-association/) and its partner provincial hotel associations. “We believe in supporting initiatives that uplift and protect our communities, our customers and our people,” said Matt Friesen, Vice President of Central Sales, Western Financial Group. “We’re a proud sponsor of this program, knowing the positive impact that ending this barbaric act will have on many people’s lives.”
