'It's unfair for manufacturers to sell expensive products that should last for many years and then abandon them. This means the product could lose the features that justified the hefty price tag, and potentially create a security risk or add to the electrical waste mountain if it has to be replaced. Manufacturers must up their game and provide vital tech updates for their smart products for longer, otherwise the government should consider further intervention in this area, including specifying a minimum number of years that these products have to be supported for.' We’re delighted to introduce Harry Gaskell, the new chair of Which? Board Harry first joined Which? on the Council of Trustees in December 2019 and until recently was a senior Partner at EY working as a consultant responsible for digital technologies and sustainability. He says: ‘Which? is a unique organisation and one that has systemic importance as the UK’s consumer champion. As well as making things simpler, fairer and safe for all consumers we need to deliver a brilliant service to all of our subscribers. My focus is to make sure Which? can do both of those things in a way that makes us stand out, delivered in a way that suits every individual. I’d like Which? to be a trusted source of advice for consumers as they make all the changes to their lives that we all need to make if we are to make the UK sustainable. There’s a tremendous amount of change coming to our homes and lives; we’ll have to change the cars we drive, we will need to insulate and heat our homes differently and we’ll have to make the switch to products that regenerate the world’s resources rather than deplete t
Our latest survey of 1,000 adults who flew from a UK airport between January and October 2022, reveals over 40% of travellers reported a problem with their flight, such as long delays, cancellations and loss of luggage. https://lnkd.in/eCgYj46C 39% reported that they had little confidence that airlines would treat them fairly if things were to go wrong in the future. Which? is calling on the government to urgently follow through on proposals to give the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) the necessary powers to clamp down on airlines when they flout the law. We’re calling for a major overhaul of the travel industry https://lnkd.in/eH9HEN8Z #TransformTravel #Aviation

Recently, we’ve launched our thermal camera loan scheme, aimed at helping colleagues understand more about the energy efficiency of their homes so they can identify ways in which to cut their energy bills and carbon emissions. Stephanie Kipling, principal scientific adviser and sustainability champion at Which?, took the camera back home and this is what she discovered. ‘After taking the obligatory picture of our cat, we turned our attention to our house. I live in a new-build house, and the camera showed that the external walls are all consistently warm, giving confidence that the house is well insulated. My front door is cooler than the walls around it and has particularly cold areas at the bottom of the door. So for our next steps, we'll look into making or buying a draught excluder to place along the bottom of the door.’ #Sustainability #EnergyEfficiency
Energy firms and the government must urgently investigate why so many customers on traditional prepayment meters have not yet accessed the government support available and stop at nothing to ensure that these customers are able to access this vital support without further delay. Traditional prepayment meter customers should also be prioritised in smart meter roll-outs where appropriate, so that financial support can be delivered automatically in future. Please read our open letter below. MoneySavingExpert.com | Age UK | Citizens Advice | National Energy Action (NEA) #EnergySupport #PrepaymentMeters #Energy
