What is the hiring process like at Co-op?

      Co-op reviews

Suitable for Gullible Foreign Students or Graduate Visa Holders :)

      Pros

The pay is decent and staff discount.

      Cons

The promised 15-minute paid break doesn’t actually happen, and discussing it feels taboo. Ironically, the Co-op’s values don’t extend to staff. There's a lack of diversity; the store is mainly run by Gullible international students or those on post-study work visas. Managers prefer hiring these workers because they tend to ask fewer questions and can be pushed for maximum output in minimum hours. Favoritism is also a significant issue. Let’s strive for a fairer workplace and a better world. Thanks.

At Co-op we believe in fairness and equity, and this is reflected in our recruitment processes. We select candidates for interview based on assessment scores. Our assessments are unbiased and performance is measured on situational judgement and job-relevant criteria. Our hiring managers are unable to access any information about protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010, including race or religion. It is because we see strength in diversity that our store managers endeavour to recruit teams that represent the communities that they serve. Presently, there are no employee referral schemes in operation in our stores and as such, hiring managers do not receive any financial incentive from informal referrals to the careers site. However, you've made some very serious allegations and we intend to investigate this. We would appreciate if you could provide further information to aid us in this investigation. Please complete the details on the former colleague contact form here: https://colleagues.coop.co.uk/contact Thank you for your raising your concerns and we look forward to hearing from you.

      Pros

Good culture, nice people. Great opportunity to move into different roles once you’re working for the co-op.

      Cons

Slow to make change, too much bureaucracy. Held back by complex IT systems and business process.

      Pros

      Offer good salary & benefits

      Cons

Terrible management, current interview process is horrendous for ND candidates, Having a very unclear format - having to pre record video questions (which is a one shot opportunity) and then after offering support, receiving NONE. So disappointed as really wanted to return to Coop but they've made it impossible. Talk the talk but DO NOT WALK THE WALK!

Thank you for your review and feedback. We're not sure when you last applied for a role with us, but we do not currently use video interviews for our roles as we phased these out in July. We regularly review our application processes and for a time we used video interviews for some of our head office based roles. The video interview technique enabled candidates to see the questions before preparing an answer and a re-record should they need to. Our current process involves some assessments designed to measure your suitability for the role and alignment to Co-op behaviours. We also send out all of our interview questions ahead of the interview, with the exception of some technical based questions specific to the role.

      Pros

      - Good for CV - Got the job as a new hire with no previous management experience - Reasonable holiday allowance & can be quite flexible due to the nature of the shifts depending on who else you work with

      Cons

      - Not paid well enough compared to CTMs. Was about £1 more p/h which does not nearly reflect the extra responsibilities required of you - Demanding - constant requests to come in at short notice or to move shifts around - Constantly working in stores you never have before - Often required to do long hours or ‘clopens’

Thank you for your review and feedback. We're happy to hear that you were able to join us with no prior experience. We focus on recruiting colleagues that display behaviours aligned to our values rather than experience, that way we know our teams put colleagues and customers at the heart of everything they do. We're sorry to learn that we didn't get the flexibility right for you, we hope you told your manager about any changes to your availability so this could be reflected in the rota assigned to you.

Could be great but currently scraped being good

      Funeral director
      Current employee
      Cardiff, Wales
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Comprehensive Benefits Package: Includes full sick pay, four weeks of paternity leave, ten days of bereavement leave, and generous annual leave allowances. Meaningful Work: Supporting families during one of the most difficult times in their lives can be deeply rewarding. When done well, the role allows you to provide a dignified and memorable farewell for loved ones.

      Cons

Lack of Industry Experience in Management: Many managers have no background in funeralcare, resulting in decisions that prioritize financial metrics over empathy and client/family experience. High Burnout and Poor Retention: Staff are frequently overworked and underpaid, with exposure to emotionally traumatic situations. Reports of PTSD are common but rarely acknowledged or addressed. Misleading Contracts: Entry-level roles are often offered as part-time (e.g., 18.75 hours), yet staff are expected to work full-time hours, including on-call shifts, nights, and weekends. These expectations are not always clearly communicated during recruitment. Toxic Senior Leadership Culture: Instances of managerial bullying, harassment, and exclusionary practices are reported. Staff who don’t “fit in” may be unfairly targeted or managed out of the business. Promotion Barriers: Advancement often depends more on internal politics than merit. There is a perception that inappropriate behavior has played a role in some promotions, undermining trust in the process. Inadequate Interview Screening: The recruitment process lacks physical capability assessments, leading to hires who may struggle with the physical demands of the role, increasing injury risks for themselves and colleagues. Safety Neglected: Staff with workplace adjustments are often pressured to ignore them for operational convenience. Funeral teams are frequently understaffed, leading to unsafe manual handling situations. Union Concerns: USDAW is perceived by many as being too closely aligned with management. Pay negotiations and safety concerns are not always robustly supported, and staff feel pressured to accept subpar offers. No Incentive to Progress: Management roles offer little financial reward compared to frontline positions. Managers are expected to be available 24/7, with severe consequences for missing calls, making progression unattractive. Cultural Imbalance: There is a strong emphasis on progressive values, which can feel exclusionary to those with differing views, including religious beliefs. Diversity and inclusion efforts sometimes appear to outweigh merit and experience.
