      Interesting Problems, Shady Management

      Software engineer ii

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Most engineers at Datadog are high performers working on interesting and impactful projects. You'll likely learn a lot from being an engineer here and be exposed to new and relevant technology.

      Cons

There is a lack of transparency between managers and engineers. The company likes to brag that it's never had to conduct layoffs, but they have a tendency to "disappear" engineers with no warning or formal process while citing performance. Managers are, unfortunately, not your allies here. Management expects engineers to onboard quickly with minimal support and guidance, and is quick to blame engineers for any missed deadlines

      Pros

      - fitness stipend, snacks, office is nice - coworkers generally are nice - PTO policy is great - never had mass layoffs

      Cons

      - abysmal eng tooling - hard to really know how well you are doing - budget cuts following the mass layoffs in other companies led to drastically reduced quality of life

      Incompetent management - CYA culture

      Engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Free lunch 3 days a week

      Cons

The culture here is cover your a** and blame others. You can do everything right and still get PIPed as a way for managers to shift blame downwards. Incompetent management loom large here, many of whom have failed upwards during the tech boom of the 2010s. Because directors and most managers are untouchable, blame for any problems go to the ICs and they are the ones who suffer. PIPs are used in place of layoffs and as a way to avoid paying out annual stock grants. There is no severance. It makes management look good to know they saved the company thousands by firing employees while covering up for their own failures. Just because the product is good doesn't mean it's a good company to work for. You will regret working here.

Great people but culture is going downhill

      Technical support engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - great people, strong collaboration within the team, direct Managers genuinely care about the wellbeing of their team - Great office with catered lunches 3 days per week - Party pups once per month where the whole office gets together and either go out for an event or has a themed party in the office, great for team bonding and also meeting people from other departments - great learning opportunities, they will sponsor your certifications - no layoffs during the period a lot of tech companies were downsizing - good benefits, there is health insurance, pension contributions and fitness reimbursement

      Cons

      - in the last 2 years the focus has been solely on KPIs and numbers, so much that VPs are looking each week into the numbers of tickets the Support Engineers are taking, they revised the KPIs for different product areas as they have different complexity but then decided everyone should get 6 tickets per day which would bring some Support Engineers to 170% utilisation per day, people are overworked and a lot of them above the KPIs required for the role but it seems this is the norme now - Return to office has been so strictly imposed in Support without a possibility to be flexible if peoples life circumstances have changed, it will impact your future progression in the company, they say to stay home if you are not feeling great but your RTO attendance will be impacted and in 6 months when you are up for a promotion the only thing they will see is the number and that you didn't meet the requirements - a lot of attrition, you can rarely find people here longer than 2/3 years, even Managers who have been here longer are leaving - our enablement team is so out of touch with the product and what is actually needed to do the job, they think it's possible to ramp up in 3 months by watching videos, we need more live workshops and experienced Support Engineers showing how to troubleshoot issues

      Pros

Great benefits - health insurance, fertility, unlimited PTO, 3 x lunch in office, phone allowance, plenty of on-site events, pension etc. The people at DD stand-out, everyone is super friendly, smart and want to work hard. The company performance is excellent and is in great financial shape. Zero concerns on job security unlike many of my friends in other tech companies.

      Cons

Office attendance policy is 3 days in office, some people will like that and others won't.

      Pros

      - Amazing culture that starts from the top. By amazing culture I mean: fun events; fun people; nearly zero politics; respectful leadership - No layoffs in the history of the company. Quite amazing considering so many tech companies were laying off left and right just a few years ago - Free lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Not always the most appetizing food however, it's free and you can make yourself a decent plate - Pretty good benefits including: unlimited PTO; fitness reimbursement; phone reimbursement; home office setup

      Cons

      - Most departments do not offer full time remote work. Although I enjoy working here, I may have to leave the company soon since I plan to relocate and there's no office where I'm going. - No end of year bonus despite the company being quite successful - No end of year party for the company as a whole

Decent Company with a Few Glaring Issues

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      * They are decent with their tech; tech stack is modern and efficient. * Good career progression (in most teams) and some mentorship. * Some networking opportunities.

      Cons

      * There are often silent layoffs and firings. There is a culture of firing people who have been at the company for a while. I have heard of cases of firing without a PIP in place. * They are more ruthless and a sink or swim culture is now in place. * There are many cases of management stepping down to the IC level because of tough company expectations.

      Pros

      - Great culture & colleagues - Great product, loved by customers - Great benefits, free lunch 3x a week - Great processes for ECSM - Best-in-class training making something complex easier to digest - Company is rather conservative with funds - job security compared to other industry players who spend with less consideration

      Cons

      - Pay relatively low compared to industry - Unnecessarily complex billing - Inflexibility in getting credit requests & refunds due to accidental usage processed, causing frustration to customers - Depending on dept, Workload is relatively high
