What is the hiring process like at Epic?

      Epic reviews

Decent place to start, hard to stay

      CEO approval

      Pros

I promised myself I wouldn't write a review until I'd worked somewhere post-Epic for long enough to have a broader perspective--so here it goes. The first 6 months are a ton of fun. It feels like freshman year of college as you make friends with your new-hire colleagues, have minimal work responsibilities, and finally make adult money. Epic's new hire onboarding makes it easy to make friends, and I'm happy to say I've met a few lifelong friends because of Epic. That said, Epic's high turnover means that many of these friendships will be bittersweet, as you'll lose about 40% of your new hire class (50% for project managers) after two years. And when people leave Epic, they usually leave Madison too, as the job was the only thing tying them to the area. As you'll read in other reviews, the food is great, your coworkers are friendly and competent, and Madison is a great mid-sized city with amazing summers. And even if the technical skills don't translate to your next job, the soft skills and professionalism will. You'll be a good fit for the job if the below applies to you. See the 'Cons' section for why you wouldn't be a good fit. Good fit: - This is your only corporate offer. - You value money more than your free time. - You have family nearby - You put a high value on stability and job security - You want to feel that your work is a net-good to society

      Cons

After the first 6 months, things start to go downhill. The time from 6-24 months is very stressful because you'll have a full workload yet still be slow with your work, which is to be expected for anyone learning something for the first time. Most roles average 45-50 hrs but project managers are higher at 50-60 hrs. I could mostly handle the 45-50 hr weeks, but what no one talks about is the living choice you have to make: live downtown and commute an hour roundtrip, or live in the suburbs closer to work? Downtown is what makes Madison fun--it's walkable, tons of food and cultural amenities, and great lake activities in the summer. But driving every day for over an hour really took a toll on me--it turns a 9.5 hr work day into 10.5 or 11 hrs. The alternative is living in the suburbs where you have a higher quality of life during the work week, but feel like you're wasting your 20s in suburbia. As you'll read in other posts, cons include lack of remote flexibility, below-average vacation and holidays (forget sabbatical, only 1/3 of people make it to that) and high stress. Two things that people often forget to mention: 1) The pay is no longer that great compared to cost of living--Madison rent has increased very quickly over the past 4-5 years. 2) The lack of vacation / remote flexibility wears on transplants the most. I'm lucky to be a Midwesterner, but for people who don't have family locally, they were often the first to leave Epic, often citing homesickness. Just my opinion, but I don't think this job is worth moving across the country for unless you're a developer. Reasons you shouldn't take this job: - You have another corporate offer in a bigger city or closer to home - You value time over money - You have kids or want to have kids (no remote flexibility and below-avg parental leave) - You don't want to choose between suburbia and a long commute

An Epic Interview and Onboarding Processes

      Infrastructure as code engineer

      Pros

I'm a new employee, so just speaking to what I know so far. The interview process was the best of any I have ever had. The assessments were reasonable and interview questions were practical. And it seems like the company has an emphasis on fostering new talent which is a great way to get into healthcare software if that's your thing.

      Cons

100% In person, which isn't a problem for me but something to be conscious of when deciding to apply

Well-defined recruitment with high expectations for self-starters

      Project manager
      Current employee
      Madison, WI

      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Well-defined and seamless recruitment process. I always knew what was expected of me and felt there was always someone available to answer questions. Their motto of: "Do good, have fun, make money" really shines through their company culture and processes. Great benefits, campus is beautiful, and culinary is excellent. For more information about the company and its culture, I recommend listening to the Freakonomics and Acquired podcast episodes about Epic to learn more about what Epic does and how.

      Cons

Not a con but a personality type: you have to be a productivity-obsessed self-starter. They'll throw a lot at you and you're expected to turn everything around on tight deadlines.

Can be decent for some people, but overall pretty bad

      Implementation project manager

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Good pay for its location - Not a bad place to start out of college

      Cons

Joining Epic was initially exciting, given its reputation for revolutionizing the healthcare industry. However, beneath the surface lies a toxic work culture that can drain even the most enthusiastic employees. The work-life balance is non-existent. Expect to regularly clock in long hours, sacrificing personal time and mental well-being in the process. The company culture subtly promotes the notion that working excessively long hours is not only acceptable but also expected. As IS (project manager), they flat out told you 45 hours are bare minimum and 50 are expected/regular. As a result, half of my hiring class has already left (we started two years ago), and I've seen so many higher tenure people leaving in my short time here. Furthermore, communication within the company is lacking. Important decisions are often made without proper consultation or transparency (snow day policy is a peak example). The upper management rarely, if at all, asks for our feedback. Speaking of feedback, the feedback process and culture here are really exhausting. Instead of fostering constructive criticism for personal and professional development, feedback often come across as backstabbing/nitpicking. The lack of transparency in the feedback is worsening this situation. Constructive feedback should be given openly and transparently. However, all the feedback is anonymous to you, and your TL sometimes doesn't even have an idea of what an actionable feedback looks like/wheter this feedback is really actionable. Still, they will hold it against you when time comes for salary raise/promotion/terminaiton.

      Pros

      - A straightforward hiring process (although not too transparent) - Great training program to help you get oriented to the working world

      Cons

      - Long hours - Very limited work from home - Limited PTO - Stressful, especially if customer facing

Okay first job, experiences vary wildly

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good food and health insurance. You get a lot of experience of how to deal with a corporate environment and have a lot of opportunities to practice establishing boundaries between your work and personal life.

      Cons

Your work/life balance will be entirely decided by your manager and how willing you are to stand up for yourself (if they give you the opportunity to). Your manager is also the main contributor to your compensation, if they fight for you in reviews/rankings, you will get a decent raise, otherwise you could get stuck with 1-3% for two years until you get a new manager and suddenly get a 15% raise because they actually see you as a human being. Hypothetically speaking, of course. The culture leaves a lot to be desired, the bureaucracy continued to pile on more and more for the tech services division as my time went on, required additional tasks and nebulous policies delivered from the top-down while only listening to feedback once it became impossible to ignore. Again, policies tend to be selectively applied depending on your direct manager. Your sanity is often also up to chance, if you get lucky you'll have customers with a well-staffed IT team that can do their job instead of you doing it for them, in other cases you'll be stuck explaining things over and over again to the next new hire in the rotation. Also "Technical Solutions Engineer" is a myth, you're Tech Services the second you walk in the door (and back to an engineer the second you leave and put it on your resume...) You do get to do some solutions engineering, but more often you're spending most of your time working on troubleshooting tickets for your customers and the rest documenting your time logged to them for billing.

Epic runs a fair interview process with clear expectations throughout. It never feels like you get lost in the shuffle. Unlike most companies, Epic takes the time to do a strong training program and introduces you to various other people at the company who can mentor and guide you. Awesome campus and food

      Cons

There are a lot of classes during the first few weeks so you need to make sure you are ready to go and stay focused!
