The union is mandatory with an large fee compared to the overall pay, if you're starting out. Being in the union doesn't really affect the employee unless they're getting fired. I didn't meet a union rep until 6 months in. Many of the benefits take time to accumulate. Cashiers frequently get shorter shifts, but even if you get an 8+ hour shift you're expected to stand on one place the whole time. No 30 minutes breaks for cashiers, maximum you'll get two 15 min breaks.
