What are pay increases like at KPMG?

      Pros

People are just the best you can find in the industry. Extremely talented, clever and genuinely helpful, it's a shame the company does not value them enough. However, I've learnt a lot from my colleagues.

      Cons

It's tough to stay motivated when we're getting nothing back. Three years in a row with no pay raise, and a pitiful 3% bonus, while the firm flaunts record-breaking profits and partners are making the news with highest salaries ever. It's clear they don't value us, their most important asset. You work 40-50 hours a week on the edge of burnout with zero rewards or recognition, and there is so much pressure to stay on the go non-stop. There is no downtime between engagements, no time to train, and promotions have been on ice for years. Honestly, it's just a shame.

      Pros

You will get exposure to client work that will set you up for your career, Skills are extremely transferable and valued by market. It teaches you broader professional skills that I note are lacking in other industries. Was lucky enough to explore the world with consulting work also.

      Cons

You are one of many. Thus, no matter how hard you work or time you commit there is a lot of competition for promotions, pay increases and just general recognition. Because of the scale, you are complete dependent on your team to speak on your behalf for reward and recognition. There is also next to no work/life balance. Whether that is not knowing where your next work assignment will be or being handed a last-minute proposal at 5pm that is due for submission at 8.30am the next day.

      Pros

If you find the right team, you'll work with the best people and have the best leadership that will actually help you grow within the company. Great benefits.

      Cons

Alot of inadequate individuals in leadership roles who can't lead. Don't stress too much about the goal setting I promise it's really not as big a deal as they make it out to be. Also please remember that no matter how many times they drill their "values and morals" into your head...they don't give actually care about any of that in anything they do. The pay is a joke for the work you do (way below market rate), no matter what performance rating you get there isn't a huge pay increase or bonus, so there is no real incentive for hard working individuals. There is a huge gap between what social events look like for administrative staff and management and even between groups. Some groups get lasvish lunches, name brand gifts and amazing experiences and other groups get a cheese board and some crackers while they play kahoot in the office. Just learn where to put your energy so you don't waste your time.

      Cons

Pay from Grad to Associate Director level not competitive. Business not landing new clients or jobs means no promotions and miniscule pay increases. Last year decision was made to pull bonuses for anyone who got an "effective performance" rating which seemed really unfair because they brought a lot of ratings down for high performers so they didn't have to pay a bonus! Internal politics in some pockets means sweet talkers have accelerated progression in the firm, who you know can get you in (I had a director who openly told us how they got their daughter an interview and role in the service line she wanted) and toxic behaviour gets ignored or pushed under the rug.

      Pros

The people at KPMG truly are some of the best I've worked with and are great on a personal and professional level. The firm's pay is competitive and in line with the other Big 4 Firms, if not differentiated; but the Firm has a fiscal year after the other Big 4, allowing them to react to unexpected Salary changes before raises and promotions are announced. This ensures KPMG is rarely, if ever, behind the other firms in terms of compensation. Massive global firm, with opportunities in many different geographical locations and business sectors.

      Cons

As with most other public accounting firms, hours are often very demanding. Hours outpace pay until reaching management level, and there are often many opportunities that offer better pay for less hours within the industry (though this again tends to turn around when reaching the management group)
